  1. I was trying to find ProCoder on line, so I followed the link from this page:

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Canopus_ProCoder

    to:

    http://www.canopus.com/US/products/procoder_express/pm_procoder_express.asp

and discovered it does not say the version number. If you place it in your cart using the BUY/DOWNLOAD NOW button (not the plain BUY button), then go backwards from the cart to the item by clicking on the product name (not via your browser's Back button), you get this link:

    https://secure.element5.com/esales/product.html?sessionid=180665173&random=785e1220294...oductid=522086

which says it is version 1.0

Sooooooo, any ideas on what is going on? I was looking for the 1.5, as I read it was better than their 2.0. Any suggestions? Anyone know what version you would really get via their download?

  2. Hi Dobermann

As far as I know you can download Procoder 1.25 trial version from Canopus site but you can,t download a full version (only 2.0)
because you need a USB dongle and then Procoder 2.0 full version is shipped in a package.

  3. Doberman,

Procoder express is different than the Procoder everyone here is talking about. (Same basic engine, but different program)

Procoder 1.5 was an earlier version. No longer sold new (try ebay?)

Procoder 2.0 is their professional software and runs about $500.00

Procoder Express is version 1.0, since it is new. It runs about $49 and uses a dumbed down 2.0 engine with less options. Like CCE Basic or Mainconcept MPEG 1.4.2

There are two encoding arenas, Pro and enthusiast(home user)
For pro, there are CCE Special, Procoder 2.0, and Mainconcept MPEG Pro.

For Home, there are CCE Basic, Procoder Express and Mainconcept MPEG 1.4.2.

Of course, there is also CCE Pro and CCE Xtream, both of which include a custom PC, are in the "production company" category and run over $4,000

The big difference is what you want to spend to get the best output.

    Hope this helps,
    Mike

Not quite. MC MPEG Pro is an Adobe additive.
The MC 1.4.2 is also considered part of the "pro" spectrum.
At least as much as CCE or Procoder.

The "dumb" versions of MC come inside software, like Adobe MPEG Encoder, Sonic MPEG Encoder, Ulead MPEG Encoder, etc. Those are special limited versions of MC.

  5. Good point Lord Smurf.

I have never used the MC Pro plug-in, so assumed it was their High end offering, and that it was cheaper ($250) since it was only available as a plug-in.

Are you sure the Standard encoder is considered Pro? I have used it (the stand alone), and it doesn't strike me as professional level. Maybe it is just personal preference, but I just tend to group items by price range and feature set, and MC seems more entry-level than Procoder or CCE SP.

The most important thing is that Procoder, CCE, and MC are all superior products compared to Ligos, Honestech, etc. I guess personal preference will have to be the deciding factor.

  6. Thanks for all the replies and the info. I don't really want to spend two arms and two legs on an encoder. I want to make good quality DVDs from either clips from Satellite or else my own camera's avi import.

I thought I had it all figured out. Did all the stuff I read about, then burned a DVD. Before burning, it looked great on my CRT. The DVD looked crappy on my Zenith DVD player. I was expecting the opposite (interlaced vs progressive basic nature difference of the two components) .

Actually, I posted more info on this subject here:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=256502

This problem is what sent me searching for ProCoder 1.5 in the first place. Now that I know the price is so high, I think I need to back up here and try harder to figure out what went wrong in the first place.

Anyone care to have a look at the link of the topic thread and/or clips and offer any suggestions?

    Thanks!
    Dobermann
