Unless you have an AVI settop player that will play DIVX or XVID format or you use a computer that outputs to a TV, you really can't.
To play a video on most DVD settop players, you have to convert to MPEG as in a DVD, or a VCD and sometimes a SVCD.
A DVD would require encoding the AVI to MPEG2 (Compliant to DVD standards), then authoring to DVD format.
A easy way would be a program like DIKO or TheFilmMachine, depending on what type of AVI you have.
For the best quality, you need a good MPEG encoder and an authoring program.
