  1. Why format? Try Fdisk on it from a floppy. Fdisk is on every windows computer I have so it should be easy to find.

I did have a similar computer that did this, I put in three HDs but finally just threw it out.

Hint: ----->2000 and XP use diskpart, not fdisk.

In the future, you could also try GetDataBack
    http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm

I have heard good things about it over at
    http://club.cdfreaks.com.

You can try it for free, but to recover files over a certain size, you need to register/buy.

"No reformating, and no defragging, no disc clean up, no nothing, except a

"weird serial number, or model number"

that means nothing comes up in explorer, and does not follow Western Digital codes, or so they said last time this happened."

I missed this the last time around.

Your drive is not filled up, in the sense you think it is. Your FAT and MBR are all screwed up.

The wierd serial number, is it a bunch of symbols that mean nothing to you? Hashes and like right hand corner angles?

And any folder you try to open can't be found or opened?

I don't know what trashed your drive, if I did, I wouldn't have had the same problem a couple times myself.

Have a drive right now on the other computer upstairs in the same condition, 137 GBs of gibberish.

That is one that Norton's Disk Doctor was no help with, nor "fdisk /mbr"

Reformat needed, from a boot disk and a: prompt.

    Cheers,

    George

You just named a website with a commercial domain. A website will not partition a hard drive for you.

It is not a recognized command in 2000 and XP.

Like I said b4, 2000 and XP use diskpart.

The program I listed above (GetDataBack) will allow you to recover data from a drive, even if that drive is not recognized in windows.

You could always boot from the XP CD, and start an install, use the wizard to delete the bad partition (be sure to delete the right one, all data will be lost) and then remake and format the partition.

    I deny the bad reputation.

I have two WD drives that are still going strong.

I see your denial and raise you one more denial. I have several WD drives (3 160's and a 200gb) and they all work perfectly. No problems with anything ever. Very reliable.

I've owned them all, and the only ones that ever went bad were a couple of Maxtors, and I still like maxtor as well as WD. it can happen to ANY Drive, and I've not found one more prone to another unless you happen to own that ill fated series of IBMs, or the same with the Bigfoot drive of doom.

As usual, instead of the OP saying whether he got any help from this thread, it has degenerated to "My drive is better than your drive."

Why do so few supplicants reply that someone did or did not help them"

    Cheers,

    George
