I just converted a divx to VCD using the guide provided on this site. I had to extract the sound and video only files (using VirtualDub) separartely before I started to encode them with TMPGEnc otherwise I wasn't getting any picture.

My problem is that I noticed that the audio levels in my final VCD is slightly degraded and not as good as the original although the video is pretty good. Could someone suggest as to why this is so and are there any settings in VirtualDub/TMPGEnc that might have led to this problem.

    Thanks

When you use TMPGEnc, load a template for the VCD, but hit the "Settings button" you can increase the audio level during convertion.

  3. Keep in mind that Divx audio is already heavily compressed. Reencoding it amounts to running it through compression again, which will always degrade quality.

I'm not sure if it really makes any difference, but you might try converting it to WAV and then to MP2. In theory, the conversion to WAV would interpolate a bunch of useless information which could then be dropped again by the MP2 encoder rather than eliminating even more of the actual audio. Might just be wishful thinking though...
