Hello.
I'm hoping that someone here could help me.
My friend bought Philips DVP642 a few months ago. She told me that her player plays DivX recorded onto DVDRs. So, I started burning my anime onto DVDRs thinking that I'll be able to watch them when I get my Philips 642.
I just bought one for myself 2 days ago, and tried to watch anime that I burned onto DVDRs. Well, it didn't work. It crashed my DVD player, and I had to unplug it, then pluged back in to get a disc out.
Is there anything wrong with my DVD player?
I've already burned about 100 DVDRs. I would like to avoid reburning them onto CDRs.
Does anyone know if there are other players out there that plays DivX on DVDRs?
Please help me...
Thank you.

i have had two philips dvp642 /17 and /37 both have worked for me using dvd+r . there are alot of threads to read on this player that would be a great place to start. also with alot of anime its in divx 3, wich i dont think the dvp642 handles, but check other threads its talked about in there
People who love sausage and respect the law should never watch either of them being made. -
Hi,
Thank you for the replies.
I checked my files. It looks that everything is within the specification.
I actually reburn a few episodes onto CDRs. It played fine without any problems.
I've tried TDK, Fuji, and Sony DVD+Rs. They all failed.
I've read several threads here, but most of them are about subtitles. Maybe I didn't narrow the search enough, but I'm pretty exhausted from reading.
I'm really lost...
Could my new DVD player be defective?
Please help me.
Thank you. -
I'm not a big DivX user, but I did make one DVD+RW DivX disc as a test and I briefly played it and it worked fine. I did not watch the whole disc as the whole purpose behind making it was to get subtitles working before burning to CD-R and I stopped watching after about a minute or so. Maybe your player is defective.

I have two Philips 642/37's. Both have no problem with AVI's except for those AVI files encoded with QPEL or GMAC. If you're an impatient person, the Philips is not for you. You have to wait a few seconds for the Philips menu to display the DVD content. If you try to 'force' the menu or scroll too quickly, the player WILL lock up. BTW - the avi titles are limited to 11 characters.
If your files play properly on the same standalone player when burned to cd, I would conclude the player is fine, it's the file that's being burned to DVD incorrectly. Are you using a 'pirate' version of Alcohol 120, CloneDVD, DVDcopy or other? Many software manufacturers have 'bugged' their software so it will burn DVD's incorrectly. It may 'appear' to have burned properly, but it will not work.
Try burning the AVI's to a DVD-RW using different burning programs. You may want to use the software that came with your burner. Additionally, there are burners that are not compatible with some software programs - Are you burning TOC or DAO?
Check the file with GSpot to ensure it is adequate.
Good luck

JPKITTE,
what disk format did you use on the DVD-R?
Most players will only spin ISO. If you did UDF or UDF / ISo hybrid it may not work.
They only players that spin UDF data disk seems to be the I-O data DVD/DivX High-Def player or HTPC'sFor the love of God, use hub/core labels on your Recordable Discs! -
Hi,
Thank you all for your replies.
I actually found out that my player does play avi's on DVD+Rs.
I have another question I'd like to ask you.
I tried to play about 30-40 DVDs.
I could separate my discs to 2 groups. The discs in group 1 takes only 10-15 seconds to show the menu. The discs in group 2 takes somewhere around 50 seconds with a lot of clicking noise to load.
Is 50 seconds with a lot of clicking noise normal?
I read about ISO thing, but it's still a little confusing to me.
The software I use are either Nero Express or Sonic Record now.
The burner I use are either NEC3520, Liteon SOHW-822S (came with the computer), or Liteon 451S.
I'd appreciate for any help I can get on this.
Thank you.
