Hi, I have some DVDs of holidays and parties etc. which I want to re-edit.

The problem is I don't have the original tapes anymore, so I need to copy them back to the hard drive. But when I do, I get vob(?) files and not mpegs.

So the question is; how do I get the files off the DVD in mpg form, so that they can be editted?

    thanks

I just answered a similar question, so check this thread.

Womble MPEG- VCR or Womble MPEG VIDEO WIZARD can edit your files.
If you don't need another editing utility, try this:
Use DVDDecrypter IFO mode and select stream processing. Now you can demux the VOBs to the separate audio & video streams. If you need to remux them (to MPEG), use the MPEG Tools feature found in TMPGEnc .

There are plenty of guides to help you further, just do a search.

    One Large VOB:

    1. Insert DVD and start DVD Decrypter.
    2. Click Tools/Settings/IFO Mode Tab.
    3. In the File Splitting Option select NONE, then Click OK.
    4. Click Mode/IFO. Click the Input Tab and you will see the Program(s) & Chapter(s).
    5. Select the Program and Chapters you wish to rip.
    6. Choose your Destination and Rip.

    Demuxing:

    1. Insert DVD and start DVD Decrypter.
    2. Click Mode/IFO.
    3. In the input tab, select the Program & Chapters you want to demux.
    4. Click the Stream Processing Tab, and check-mark Enable Stream Processing.
    5. Check-mark the Video stream & Audio stream boxes. Then make sure the the Audio stream is highlighted.
    6. Select Demux.
    7. Choose your Destination and Rip.

    Remuxing:

    1. Start TMPGEnc.
    2. Click Files/MPEG TOOLS.
    3. Select the Simple Multiplex Tab. In "Type" select MPEG-2 Program (VBR).
    4. Locate the demuxed video & audio files created above.
    5. Name your Output file.
    6. Click Run.

Other people may have other ideas using the same (or different) tools, but this is what always works best for me. (Hope I didn't miss a step. If I did, you'll probably be able to figure it out.)
