  1. I have burned a lot of DVDs of a school concert for distribution. One disc was returned to me as bad, and when I looked at the bottom, the disc did not look like a clean burn, but had sporradic light and dark parts. This did not happen with the same disc burned on another burner. I was not sure whether to suspect the media or the burners, but when the media was burned with a different burner, the burn looked much cleaner. The discs are Memorex 8x DVD-R.

I also had another problem at home where a disc would play fine in a Panasonic DVD-R/RAM but jumped at the same spot with both my Sony and my school's Sony - both are older Sonys.

Any ideas on the cause of either of these problems?

  3. You need to check your DOM (Date of Manufacture) of your DVD player. Prior to 2002, DVD players can only read up to 4X maybe 6X but not 8X. Now with the just release store bought DVDs, I am getting pixellated pictures at times with my older DVD player. There is nothing wrong with it because I can still read older store bought DVDs with no problems.

Your choices are replace your older DVD player or burn at 4X speed (I've stocked up on 2x and 4x media because I don't have the option to burn slower than 8x on my burning software).

rippmm, I think you mean they may only read up to 4x rated media (I have no idea if this is true). I thought all dvd (set top) players played at 1x.

Regardless of the player used, physical imperfection/discoloration on the bottom of the disc is probably not a good thing.

  5. I didn't think the discoloration was good. I will try to post a picture if I remember on Monday.
