Extracting hard subtitles

Hi,
I've an Xvid video with hard subtitle. There is some way to extract the subs?? The best will be the possibility of adding another language subs..

if the subs are glued to the image, then you can´t remove them, cause after re-encoding , the subs are part of the image. The only way is to place a black matte over them...but then you´ll loose part of the footage
