You guys may remember my prior computer problems where I figured out my new system had a RAM problem. Here's my question....

I got the system up and running with an older stick of PC3200 512 MB RAM. Now, I've sent the defective one back since it was under warranty and I've gotten a replacement. It is also PC3200 512 MB. Can I swap these without screwing up anything??? I'd like to have my old stick back for my old PC which I'm rebuilding.

    Any thoughts or experiences?

  2. You want to swap a PC3200 512 MB stick for a PC3200 512 MB stick ?! Try it and find out - you could always swap back if it doesn't work.

    I'm not saying you wont.

Actually it depends on your FSB, Front Side Buss, and your board.

My Asus board will take 3 sticks of 2700, but only one BANK of 3200.

So mebbe you should read the ....manual.

    Cheers,

    George

    Glock,

Yeah, but he also shows in his details a 2.53 ghz P4. I don't know what the FSb is on that, nor the board's specs.

333 FSb calls for 2700, 400 FSB calls for 3200, 333 can charge 3200, but my manual says my Asus A7V8X-X can use all 3 banks for 2700, but only 1 bank for 3200. A year old, tops.

Not quite like back in the days of 66, 100, 133 RAM. A machine with 66 mhz clock had all day to write to 133 RAM. 2700 and 3200 are all new and all foreign to each other. Timing goes to hell. Errors galore.

Re-install and find that is not the problem. No f'in fun, pal, allow me to clue you.

    Cheers,

    George

That info in my specs is old. My board is 400 FSB. Both sticks of RAM are PC3200 but they are not the same manufacturer. Not sure if that makes a difference. Nonetheless, I'll tinker with it and see what happens.

I just bought my daughter a new computer and the guy was going to give me this Baord, I switched it to A7N8X-X just so I could use all banks with PC3200 Ram. well worth the extra $20

    Scottie,

And they're asking me just how old my board is!!!

I advised a girl like 3 years ago to buy the 8N board.

That's an antique. Still good, but still an antique.

What I like about mine is 6 PCIs and AGP.

Hard to find a board that can be expanded at the shows, today. All onboard, why would you need anymore expansion slots?

    Well, ATA cards, for 1.

    Cheers,

    George
