The hard drive should be the Primary Master (I cannot recall whether it must be though
). AFAIK you should always have a DVD burner as a master if possible, so you'd be looking at it being the Secondary Master. The DVD-ROM is a slightly tougher one, and it really depends on this question - Will you be more likely to be ripping from your DVD-ROM to your hard drive and then burning, or would you prefer where possible to do a disc to disc (on the fly) burn ?
If ripping to the hard drive is of primary concern, then I would put your DVD-ROM as Secondary Slave. If disc to disc is more important, then I would put your DVD-ROM as Primary Slave.
At the end of the day, many people here have claimed (and proven) that it really doesn't matter too much what configs you have these days, so keep in mind that the above is just how *I* would do it if it were *my* machineIf in doubt, Google it. -
jimmalenko is correct, the hard drive should be always primary master. with my setup, i used to have:
Primary master: HDD
Secondary master: DVD ROM
Secondary slave: DVD Writer -
The HD should be the primary master, but it doesn't have to be. You can select which drive to boot from in your BIOS.
My set up is:
Primary IDE Channel -
Master - 60 GB OS drive
Slave - 160 GB finishing drive
Secondary IDE Channel -
Master - Pioneer DVD-RW
Slave - 120 GB editing drive
I capture to the 60 or 160 depending on the size of the video. When I edit the video, I output the editing to the 120 on the other IDE channel. Then when I put the entire video together, I output the finalized AVI to the 160 drive back on the primary IDE channel.
If I had your machine, I would make the burner Master on the secondary IDE, and the DVD-ROM the slave. -
I would drop the CD-RW and replace it with a second HD. Your DVD-RW will do CDs OK, though a little slower.
If you really want to keep it, (I do have a CD-RW, along with a DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, a backup HD, OS HD, Editing HD.) I would use a PCI IDE controller for the extra drives. They are inexpensive these days.
Two HDs (At least) are helpful if you are capping or editing video. Make sure the PCI IDE controller will work with the slower IDE devices if you plan to run the CD or DVD drives off of it. (Some are IDE 100 or 133 only)
EDIT: Order for me with a PCI controller added is:
Primary Master, Boot HD
Primary Slave, Backup HD
Secondary Master, DVD-RW
Secondary Slave, DVD-ROM
PCI Primary Master, Video HD
PCI Primary Slave, None
PCI Secondary Master, CD-RW
PCI Secondary Slave, Zip drive -
I have no hard drives on my IDE chain.
Hehe.
Ok, assuming you're not going to go SATA, your hard disk should be Primary Master, no need for it to be, but let's avoid problems shall we?
Is it a modern system? If it is, then it hardly matters what order the REST of the drives go in. However, I would avoid putting anything slower on the same chain as the hard drive.
So in other words, lose the CD burner. Sorry!
Primary:
Master :HDD
Slave: None
Secondary:
Master: DVD-ROM
Slave: DVD-RW
I always put the READER as master, I know a lot of people say to put the burner as master, but frankly I think they're just working with retrograde hardware.
