fan-sub anime? i'm not sure, but aren't the subtitles on those burned into the picture? if they are, then no firmware will fix the problem.
in fansub encodes, they usually make the subtitles way to low in the picture and way too wide. then figure in the overscan, and the subtitles will be chopped on all sides.

Do the subs look okay with like bsplayer?
Some divx converters let you reposition subs, but I haven't tried those.
Try pushing the system menu button two times when playing, you never know what this may correct
Before doing a new FW be sure that the model number on the back of the machine is the same as the one on screen. If not, change the model nbr on screen to match. -

None of these links seem to work any more... Anywhere i can get them now? I have a DVP642/37.

Most of the firmware is gone. I've also read that the new "version/model" of the 642, cannot be flashed.
