  1. IT's been quite a while since the last version of DVD Shrink. Will they ever release a newer version of it?

  2. My guess is that since the author of DVD Shrink is now working for Ahead Nero for the Nero Recode program, they probably have an agreement where he won't continue development on DVD Shrink, since Shrink is VERY similar, not to mention free. Just my guess though.

  3. Old story, he announced this about a year.

He will continue to support the existing version but will not develop a new version.

As Steve said it is because of his contract with Nero.

Well funny you should all mention Nero, because he signed with Nero (and they released the first Recode) well BEFORE DVD Shrink 3 came out... and there have been a few revisions of 3 (latest is, of course, 3.2). So I think it's naive to think that there won't be a new version EVER.

    But don't hold your breath!

Once Ahead Fires him, then he will start working on a new version. JK

  7. What was released from DVD Shrink after Recode came out could well have been in his contract. They may have allowed releases for a certain period of time, etc.

The fact that it has been quite a while since the last release is not a good sign for anyone expecting a newer release.

  8. There's always the possibility that DVDShrink is a testbed for Recode - kind of a stealth public beta. That's the impression I've always had.

It ... IS ... DVD Shrink. With the following provisos:

    1. No ripping engine (Nero is on the up-and-up, after all, and ripping is technically illegal!)

    2. More options and suchnot.

    3. More features.

Until just recently, Shrink 3.2 was far and away ahead of Recode, but before 3.x came out Recode was much better. I, too, think that all his work goes into Recode, and that Shrink is a testbed of sorts.

I have tried both (Recode and shrink)

I have made several trials of selected scenes of different movies.

I was not able to notice an increase in quality with Recode, but the encoding time (with top quality settings) are much faster, compared to shrink (with DA and AEC)

    I now use Recode.
The only problem with Recode is: it is updated each frigging week (frequent 38 mb download sucks IMO)

But... I guess it means the transcoding engine is getting better

I just got the latest version from nero to give it a shot
I tried it the first time I installed it and didn't care for it. I'm doing a comparison on a full disc backup of Sky captain with Shrink, Nero and DVDRB

  14. I have the latest version of Recode and did try a full DVD backup last night. After ripping from DVD Decrypter, I used Recode to backup an nearly 8 GB
DVD movie in "HIGH" mode w/deep analyzed and 2 pass if needed. It took about 25 minutes to finish w/8x burner. Testing on stand alone DVD player, I found 2 scenes got freeze about 2 or 3 seconds.... But it impressed me w/time and quality (excluded for those 2 sceenes)... Wonder if I use AnyDVD and Recode, how long it will take to backup a full 2
layers DVD movie? 25 mins or 30 mins..... Anyway, I think Nero did a good job this update (especially DVD Shrink author)... and that is my test and my opinion... Anybody else have a test of the latest Recode yet!!!! please post!!!! Thanks

  15. I'd like to hear from any other LEGITIMATE comparisons between the two as well. I've actually got the latest version of Recode with my Nero suite, but I haven't really made any comparisons yet or even used it (only to try it to see how it did creating an MP4 file). I'm so used to using Shrink at this point, but I'd hate to continue using Shrink if there is a consensus that Recode is in fact better, based on accurate comparisons between the two.

I know, that means I need to do my own comparisons as well...

  16. I just finished my comparison of the full disk backup of Sky Captain. Minus 2 audio strreams and compressing everything as much as possible except the main movie, compression was like 55

I compared all the same B frames in VirtualDub at 400 zoom
(scene walking accross the ice bridge)

Recode (latest version) was faster and had slightly less pixalation compared to shrink
Shrink was very close in quality but took about 3 times longer
DVDRB did the best but took the longest by far and still had some pixelation, just smoothed out and less of them

    Edit:
BTW, both shrink and recode were within 1mb in the file size of being the same. Shrink however would let me compress the menu and extras a little more.

I have the feeling we are hijacking this thread.

But I must give one point to shrink.
Whatever the output size I select, it always gives me the exact size I have selected.

On the other hand, Recode is not that precise. I have selected custom with 4400 mb and the final size was 4470 mb (I have verified this and yes, no conversion error).

    @Demen
Freezing is undoubtely not a sign of transcoding engine error.
Burn/media/sw/hw/fw related. Not related to recode, shrink or whatever engine is used.

Freezing is a retrograde system. No modern programs should hang your entire system.
