My friend gave me a data DVD disc that had a a bunch of tv-rips he got from his TiVo thing, but I have to watch them on my computer.
Could someone point me in the right direction of a guide that will tell me how to convert the AVIs and author them in a way that will play on a DVD player?

If your looking for something basic try Ulead Movie Factory. If you have a DVD burner most likely it came with all the software you need to get started.

If in doubt, Google it.

Use DVDSanta to turn all of them into DVD files.
If you want chapters and menu, use the files DVDSanta give you and make some with TMPGDVD Author.
Or you could try Nero Vision Express
