  1. ok, so... if you've looked in my profile it is obvious the system i'm running should be pretty much up-to-date, well.. good enough to burn some simple dvds. i download tv-shows from another country and the quality of them are average, they take less than 30min to download at 300KBs and each run about 35-40 minutes long. that should give you a clue on wht kind of quality the video clips are. i try to make a compilation of them on a dvd to send to my parents (all together each dvd should be from 2-3 hours in length) since they miss the old soap-opra'z from our home country, but using the latest verson of nero, it takes me 12 to up to 18 hours to transcode wmv to dvd mpeg!

i figured it waz becauze i waz transcoding wmv files, so then i started to download random things and started transcoding avi, divx, xvid, mpeg, and mpg, but it still takes about half a day to transcode. finally one day i try to burn the same files (WMV) on my tower uzing arcsoft showbiz, and transcoding the same files takes only an hour to an hour and a half at most. my tower is not even half the speed of my labtop, and has half the ram. the only problem i have iz that the damn tower's burner is super picky about the media that it burns on, so after transcoding i have to move all the VOB files to the laptop and burn it there.

can anyone tell why transcoding on my laptop takes a million years to transcode? and wht can i do about it?

  2. don't use nero to do it. convert you wmv files to mpg files using somethign like tmpgenc plus. then import the mpegs into nero.

i recently did a a convert of a wmv file that was fairly lowish quality, 46 minutes in length, took just over 20 minutes to make to a 352 x 288 mpeg2 file with audio.

  3. If they're not great quality to begin with, just use CQ-VBR at about Q70.
Set Motion search precision at Motion Search Estimate (fast).
Set Max and average bitrate less than 4000, or even 2500 (SVCD quality).
Set to 352x240/288 aspect, or Half D1 anyhow.
Single pass will be twice as fast as 2 pass, and MSE fast will be even quicker..

why would you want the transcoding to be done with nero and nope i don't know anyway for nero to speed up the process. use TMGPE PLUS as already suggested to convert your files to MPEG.

  6. ok, so i've been uzing tmpgenc plus, transcoding or converting a 20min video takes about 25 min in a low resolution video with cbr mpeg-1 layer II Audio. so it is still taking longer or at least as long as watching the entire video clip. i do have the priority set to high for both options. is there no way i can transcode in at least half the time it takes to watch the whole video?

There faster mpeg encoders than TMPEG. CCE or Main Concept, but they require muxing the file.
