My xbox, purchesed nearly 3 years ago, is starting to give me dirty/scratched disc errors. This happens with some discs right out of the box. Any remedy for this. Can these be realigned?

You can try recalibrating the laser. There are several sites out there that can help you with the details of this. It involves rotating a potentiometer on the laser to adjust the position as it relates to the disc surface. You could also try cleaning the laser.

What is a petofnskfminiter?
Try turning is upside down (not joking)
You can also buy a new drive for about £20 and replace it yourself, not that hard a job to do.
You may find a link here.

Check out something like xbox-scene.com. There are tons of places that tell you how to fix this problem. I have never experienced it personally but I do know what the cause is usually.

I'd try cleaning the laser first. I have one of the first edition xbox's too and was thinking it might be time to clean the laser as well. Will any regular DVD laser cleaner cd work or is there a special one for the xbox?

the upside down method worked great for my ps and ps2 when they started going out lol

I don't know, I wouldn't really want to do that but if it worked go with it.Originally Posted by glockjs

XBOX did the right thing and made it's internal structure modular like a PC. If PS2 made systems like that, they'd probably be more accepted and worked on quicker at repair shops. Many of the repair shops I've been to don't even guarantee they can fix it. If they mess it up trying to fix it, you're either out a PS2 or they give you a $20-$40 credit on anything in their store. It's extremely rare to find a store where they offer a credit. With XBBOX, I know some repair shops that just buy the drives and swap them and either try to fix the broken or defective drives on their own to be placed in a different unit for less cost and no kind of parts warranty, or chuck them.Originally Posted by Hardcoreruss

I've recalibrated the laser on three of them and they are pretty darn reliable now. Pain to do, but worth the time.Originally Posted by Dr.Gee

I get the same thing... I'm lazy so I just reinsert the disc until it plays

GuestGuestThus eliminating the need to transfer an image file to your pc before burning when making a backup? You can just do a direct disc copy?Originally Posted by jimmalenko

According to xbox scence a piece of piss

FTP has nothing to do with the drive ... that's just the IP setting on the XBOX, which you're not changing when doing this.
As I said, I've only read about this (probably on xbox-scene.com) and IMSC all you need to do is unsolder the + and - of the laser, then resolder, reversing the polarities and hey presto! - one XBOX DVD-ROM.
EDIT: Russ beat me
FTP-ing to an XBOX is simple. Put the IP addresses of your XBOX and PC in the same range and that's about all there is to it.If in doubt, Google it. -
I was a bit confused for a moment there. But now it's mostly cleared up. Again, I'm not much into consoles anymore, unless it's the older Nintedo CART consoles. If you can FTP to a computer, how hard is it to create a program and set up a computer to play an XBOX game. Honestly, if it's as simple as reversing a polarity on a DVD-ROM, then someone should be able to figure a way to create a program specifically for that drive and set up their computer to run XBOX games.
