when I convert music video mpegs on most of them I end up with distorted sound, you know that clipping sound you get once and a while with vcds? Well the whole song/video is like that,I'm using TMPGenc and have tried for a week to solve this one myself and I give it now to the great minds here to help me. Toddfv411@hotmail.com

I too have a similar problem. I successfully created a AVI file off the tape from my SONY camcorder. Used TMPGEnc and created the MPEG1-Video format file. The converted file works great on my PC. Once I copy the same to a CD and play it on my DVD/VCD player (Toshiba-SD3750) the result is awful. Images are not sharp and jumping. Most of the places the sound is distorted. Is there any specific settings we need to perform in TMPGEnc for having a good quality VCD file? Thanks

  3. The usual recommendation for sound quality is to download toolame.exe (I forget where, sorry) and use it
instead of tmpgenc's lousy sound encoder. Once you have it, use the options panel's environmental settings
tab, and use the Browse button on the level 3 to find toolame.exe where you unzipped it.

For video quality, his site has how-to guides for tmpgenc to vcd, and they are very good. The "Soften Block Noise" settings on the quantize matrix tab of the settings panel lets you reduce some of the crawlies in MPEG-1, and increasing the motion search prediction on the video panel to its slowest form also seems to help.

Another tip is the filters. They appear as a series of check boxes, but you might not know that double clicking on them brings up new panels with lots of settings and sliders. These are useful for things like removing noise, balancing color, etc.

That said, I must admit that when I convert my handheld DV camcorder footage to vcd, I don't consider the
video quality acceptable. Maybe when the great minds chime in, I'll be able to change my tune.
