    Many programs will...

... whether it's worth it or not is really up to you - IMO it isn't.

    If in doubt, Google it.

for less than the price of any software that will do it well you can buy a DVD player that takes PAL and outputs NTSC. Saves a lot of heart ache.
    Read my blog here.

  4. I was given this advice i hope it helps you, as it did myself.

My TV system will not work with PAL DVD's, but I have discovered a very quick and
easy way to convert PAL to NTSC..all you need is a program called IFOedit and
    DVDshrink.

IFOedit basically does what it says, it lets you view and edit the video
information contained in the IFO files....

browse to the VIDEO_TS folder containing the PAL

open the VIDEO_TS.ifo file with IFOedit

locate the first line of info that has a filmstrip logo beside it and doubleclick
it. a dialog box will appear showing all the video attributes.

change the standard from PAL to NTSC and make sure AUTO LETTERBOX is checked, then
    click OK

**the values will not show as NTSC until you reopen the file after it has been
    edited and saved**

do the same thing for each line that has the filmstrip logo beside it, then click
SAVE overwrite the orginal IFO file and choose yes if it asks to save as BUP aswell
repeat the same process for each IFO file in the VIDEO_TS folder.

the thing is that this has only changed the Movie files to NTSC not the menu's and
therefore the menu's (and extras) will need to be removed.

    open DVDshrink

    choose FILES

select the VIDEO_TS you just edited as the input

choose REAUTHOR and select the VTS file that contains the main movie

    click ok then next

choose the output folder that the Reauthored DVD files will be saved

    click next

DVDshrink will then author everything out of the dvd except for the Movie files
that have been changed to NTSC....then all you have to do is drag and drop the
files into NERO and burn it.....

this is a fairly quick and painless procedure and I haven't had a single playback
problem yet....and yes, it does suck sometimes having to sacrifice the menus/extras....
but to me, it is a small price to pay for an easy way to cheat the system..........
besides if you really wanted, you could reopen the NTSC video files in a DVD authoring
program and add NTSC menus back into it before burning...

I think the general idea is to slow it down to 24fps and then apply a pulldown. I've never tried it myself.

    Progressive only source, not interlaced.

I can't for the life of me figure out why this isn't working out for me. When I open up the saved file in IFO edit it shows up as NTSC. I then run the clip only through DVD shrink. I then run that folder through TMPGENC_DVD_AUTHOR and it keeps showing up as a PAL file. Does anybody have any ideas? I've done conversions before and LOTS of authoring but this has me stumped. If there is an easier/ better way to convert a clip from a PAL DVD so that I can burn it onto a NTSC DVD please let me know. It is a home recorded DVD from Italy, a concert. Thanks!

  9. Many of the newer DVD players can output PAL video in NTSC format to an NTSC television. Even my little portable Polaroid DVD player can do it.

However, older DVD players don't do the conversion so they may give you trouble.

I tested 3 different television/DVD setups in my house and discovered that 2 of the 3 played my PAL DVD perfectly well. The third, which was the only DVD player older than 12 months could not play it. (I think that older one is about 3 years old.)

Even though I can play PAL on 2 of my television/DVD setups, I'm still planning to rip my PAL DVD's and rewrite them to NTSC. Reason: I periodically take my favorite videos with me to friends' houses for viewing parties, and the last 2 times I took a PAL DVD with me, the friends' systems couldn't play it. So I'm doing the conversion mostly for portability reasons. Of course, the other portability issue will be whether friends' DVD players can play back DVD+R or DVD-R formats, so I might also dump the same stuff to tape using the NTSC DVD as the original. I'm not fond of tape, but it doesn't have as many compatibility issues as DVD.

I have one but that isn't what I want to do - thanks.

  11. For those who aren't comfortable enough with technology to use some of the free utilities, here are a couple of commercial products that can convert PAL to NTSC.

    1. Adobe Premier Pro 1.5. Can open a PAL file and export an NTSC MPEG. The user interface is a bit weird, but I figured it out without RTFM-ing.

    2. Easy CD/DVD Creator 6. Comes with many DVD burners at no extra charge. You put the PAL media in your project, and you make sure the setup screen is configured to output NTSC. It does the conversion on the way out.

    3. InterVideo WinDVD Creator 2. Came with my Plextor USB video capture unit. Under Options there's an output format tab with an option to specify tv format.

I'm only just now returning to video editing/writing - the last time I did it was 1998 and the technology has changed a lot since then. I haven't actually done a PAL-to-NTSC conversion since my return to video editing (which just occurred this past week, actually), but I have seen the appropriate screens in the above programs to do it.
