  1. I am using Studio 8 and a ULead product, and XP-Pro.

When I either capture to MPEG2 or build a DVD image, I get flickers in the files. When I slow-mo the video the flickers are frames from a few seconds earlier. It was working fine so I think it might be a Mpeg2 codec problem.

    Thoughts???

If I need to upgrade the codec, how do I do that and what one should I use?

    Thanks

Give more specifics on your process. It might be frame order.

  3. It happens when I capture analog video to mpeg2 or if I render a DVD. It happens sporatically through out the files. If I capture to avi it's fine untill I render the DVD project.

As for process, I use Studio 8. Do some simple editing, nothing fancy a menue and then render the image file, usually at the best quality.

Due to the fact I think Studio stinks, I sometimes use a ulead editor and when I captured into that as a mpeg2 the file exibited the same problem.

Sorry I don't know what you mean by frame order.

I don't think frame order is problem if you capture directly to mpeg and author without converting. It happens sometimes when you capture to avi and then convert to mpeg. In Ulead this is changed in Project settings, change mpeg settings, customize, Frame type, field order A or B. If you can view the video on your computer and the flicker goes away, it is likely field order.

  5. capture to AVI, author, then enocde to mpeg.

  6. when you capture, lets say you capture interlaced with top field first, and then you go to convert this to mpeg and have the frame order set as bottom filed first, then you will get flickers. The opposite is true also..

What you must do, is to keep consistent settings such as this, so that caputre in top field first, then encode with top field first. if the source is bottom, then encode as bottom field first.

  7. I checked and Studio 8 has no settings for frame or field either in capturing or building the DVD.

This flckering is not constant or rhythmic, it is random sort of like glitches. In slow mothion the glitches are frames from a few seconds earlier.

A lot of times I am just transvering the video to DVD so I capture in mpeg2 so building the DVD goes quicker.

That is exactly what is happening on my ATI All In Wonder 9600! What causes that? I tried SVHS deck with S-Video in and the flickering is still there. I plug it directly into a monitor and the flicker is not there - only when plugged into my ATI card! I am not even recording anything yet - this is just as displayed with composite or s-video selected as the input.

I went back a couple directories from your example and found the explanation here:

Well that really sucks! That is exactly what is happening. I am trying to transfer older home tapes that definitely do not have Macrovision protection and the damn MV circuitry is kicking in. Any clue how to stop that on the ATI All In Wonder 9600? Thanks much for pointing out the source at least.

Besides additional hardware.....Nope You need additional external video equipment. See the restoration forum, there's some info there.
