And while I can't argue the sound difference at the moment (I don't have any 64 AAC songs on my iPod), I can say that I would notice it on my system. I use my iPod in lieu of a CD changer in my house.

I bet if you hooked it up to your average computer speaker at work, it'd probably sound fine.
