  1. I am moving VHS Movies to DVD using a new convertx m402u. The unit will only output non-interlaced (prog.scan) mpegs. (plextor has said they will support interlaced sometime in the future). I can't notice much of a difference in the result from the original tape , but will not have time to view all the outputs.

On what I have checked, there seems to be a little "flickering" motion from time to time, but nothing most people would notice, but I am being extra picky.

Does anyone know if going from VHS (interlaced) to an MPEG that is non-interlaced reduces quality or causes other potential problems, etc??

If so, I guess I could capture with my All-in-wonder, but perfer the convertx.

    thanks, zep

Plextor M402U uses WIS Technologies chip GO7007SB which has a motion adaptive de-interlacing. I know some people here do not like "de-interlacing" no matter how smart the method used. But with motion adaptive de-interacing, high motion video will look smooth on a regular TV. Some interlaced materials captured with other devices/softwares have a noticeable stair-case effect on a regular TV.

What you are seeing could be the "macrovision" that is filtered out by M402U. Try a tape that does not have a macrovision.

Also there is an extensive review done by cdrinfo on M402U. You might want to check it out. This is the link: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=10154&PageId=0

  3. Well, when I called plextor, they said they are working on an interlaced option. I hope they do. I was also told by tech support, that their product "handles" macrovision. I don't know if my tapes have it or not. they are older movies from 80's and 90's which I own.

Since they are progressive scan, if I use a dvd players progressive scan output, and prog. scan tv, will the quality look better than on a tv?

    thanks, zep
