Commercial music CD OK. Commercial DVD/my last year home video have no sound (also difficult to start).

High spec new machine, W2K3, NEC ND3500AG combo read/write, SB Audigy LS, 5.1 speakers.

Analog cable from combo to SB card which has no digital socket. Combo properties ticked for "Enable digital CD...". Abit IC7-G motherboard onboad audio disabled.

Playing is by UltraDVD standard with DVDIdle, as on last machine.

To start video burning again soon, machine has Pinnacle Studio 9 fully updated, NeroBurn fully updated, RealPlayer, SB software, with Windows Media Player. All on C:/

Just to check my own DVD plays with sound in standalone - I was frightened it had 'gone off' in a year!

On the machine the upgraded Studio 9 has a nice new video with good sound track plus comentary, just waiting for menus. In other words the machine works well on everything else but DVD sound!

What do I need to look for in this new machine and software load?

Turn off Digital sound. You have only connected the analogue audio cable as there is no digital input on your Soundblaster. You're trying to use something that isn't connected.....

    Richard,

Thanks, quite right, of course. Sound heard as West Side Story starts.

However, once I have answered the panel about 'starting without menus' the whole thing freezes/stops responding and the three key salute is the only way out.

Any ideas or should I start anouther thread?

Using UltraDVD/DVDIdle or the panel from self starting "Windows can perform the same action..." and selecting Nero Show Time. Both same result.

All worked well on old machine last year.

    Ok, *AHEM*

Digital sound is transferred over the SIGNAL cable, not the AUDIO cable.

    You're approaching this ALL wrong.

    Gurm,

    Thanks for reply.

I am assuming you are saying the same as Richard. I.E. the signal cable is the 40/80 wire, the IDE cable, and the audio cable is the thin 4 wire cable.

I *can* hear sound now. In persuing this I see modern sound cards work from the PCI bus now.

The other problems are more trying and it is difficult to see if it is W2K3 OS, the new new CD/DVD drive bought for it's dual layer caperbility (not involved here) or the excess of "media player" software alternatives, whatever.
