i'm quite confident this subject has been broached once or twice, but i did a quick search and found nothing of the sort. <disclaimer> if my answer can be found in an FAQ, please post appropriately. flames will be readily accepted </disclaimer>
here it goes:
if DVD-R is more widely accepted by existing standalone units, then why would i even consider DVD+R ????
please post your response as if i do NOT own a standalone player and am merely trying to reach the broadest audience possible. are there data rates in which i can store more length of video in dvd+r ??? i'm just not understanding it. are we back to the vhs/betamax days?
i truly appreciate any and all help/responses, even if you call me a moron.
danke, merci and thanks!

I use about equal amounts of both -R and +R anymore, and I can honestly say that with about a dozen different players, there was no preference between the two types of media. Frankly, all the players play both formats just fine. That's not to say that -R may be somewhat more compatible, but I think that the concerns over +R being incompatible are really overhyped. I have just recently started using bitsetting with some of my +R burns, but I've burned hundreds without it and have had no issues. I just buy what is cheap and what works well with my burners, I lean slightly towards +R because my burners seem to have a MILD preference for +R, my Benq drive in particular (my NECs do fine with either). So I usually buy whatever is the best deal in the end :P
+RW vs. -RW, on the other hand, is a whole new argument... +RW has some definite advantages when it comes to data storage with computers, not having the long finalizing waits for one.

Some people go by price. In the earlier days + was a little more expensive than - media.
Others hate +, or love -, and a few use both.
I use +RW for testing purposes quite often. -RW is too slow for my tastes (1x). The vast majority of my recording is on -R discs. Last time I used a +R disc (write-once) was around May of 03.

+R[W] was created by a segment of the industry that wanted something more malleable to the consumer product market without the burden of certain patent license fees, resulting in cheaper burners and media.
Unless you're premastering DVDs for commercial replication, all you're buying with DVD-R is peace of mind, the security that the disc is going to play on any properly licensed player, and if it doesn't the embarrassment isn't yours.
I just bought a Wal-Mart cheapie that won't even play video CDs, but it plays my DVD-RWs flawlessly (as does every other player I've tested them on). That was worth a few extra dollars upfront.

Thanks for the links JIM, that'll lock this one.
These debates used to get ugly, and we swore them off long ago.
Summary:
- DVD+R and DVD-R both work about the same these days,
- DVD-RW and DVD+RW have their uses.
- DVD-R and DVD+RW have slight compatibilty leads on video players, compared to the DVD+R and DVD-RW rivals.
None of this is new.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

some burners burn +R faster than -R's too dont they?
since i have a +R only burner, thats all i use but i just bought an NEC ND3520 so that might change. Ive tried 3-4 different types of +R's and all of them played on all 6-7 of the DVD players i tried them on except 1 which was a 4-5 year old Toshiba DVD player
