    Depends what is in the mkv. For instance if it is Real Video, MPEG1/2, etc. then you have to re-encode. Similar situation for audio, if it is vorbis then you need to re-encode. On the other hand the mkv could contain eg. XviD and aac which can easily be remuxed to avi, no need to re-encode.
