  1. I think I posted this before but can't find my posting. I'm redoing it again. My son is working on a video project. He uses his ATI TV Tuner captured a number of TV show using AVI format. File size ranges from 1.2GB to 5.8 GB. He was planning to use Adobe premirer pro to edit part he does not need. It was unfortunately that Adobe complains that it is "Unsupported format or damged file" for all of his captured avi files. However, there are successfully played in various player we have on our computer. We thought about converting it to MPEG and try. I downloaded a few conversion program and found only WinAVI works best but it won't convert file larger than 3GB. I then found an AVISplitter program but it won't recognizes the AVI file format.

Can someone please help me by suggesting me as what to do to get these AVI files into Adobe ?

Here are what I can think of to do for now:

1 - It is a good idea to convert it into MPEG ?
If yes, what tool I can use to either split or convert it ?

2 - A tool to fix the AVI files s.t. it can be used by Adobe ?

Please help. Any suggestion will greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

  2. Try Virtualdub to split, edit, and output something Adobe can recognize.

    Hi Welliep53,

    1. 1 - No, not if you want to edit. Better as AVI.

    2. As reboot says. Try installing the Panasonic DV Codec and using VirtualDub to use that (click: Video -> Compression and select), and then save AVI.

Premiere works best with DV AVI I believe - that's all I use it has no problems / reconverting.

  5. The word "split" is nowhere to be found in Virtual Dub.
Is there anything else that will split AVI?

  6. Sheesh. point and click...(sorry).
Open the movie in virtualdub, mark start, scroll to your cut point, mark end. File, save avi.
    Do the next part, etc.
You end up with as many little bits as you want.
    It's free, it's not id10t proof

  7. The instructions are more difficult to interpret than actually using the program.

  8. Virtualdub is so versatile, and there are guides on how to use it. Click on Guides, and search for virtualdub. I'm sure you'll find more than one that can explain how to cut an avi, better than me anyhow
