Read first "what is SVCD" on the left of this page.
Resolution should be 480X480 for NTSC and no more than 2700 for bitrate depending on the duration. You have to use the BitrateCalculator which can be found in videohelp.com for the exact calculation of bitrate depending on the duration of your footage and the sound bitrate (for me 192 is ok, mabe less is also ok). There is also a free program for this job (FitCD).
The rule is less footage----->higher bitrate----->better quality because a CD is only for 700Mb the most. If you wanna fit more time you have to compromise in lower bitrate=less quality

Note that many SVCD "certified" players choke on bitrates above 2000 kbps - as VHS captures are pretty "low res", you might be better off encoding to CVD (1/2 D1) - that way, it's also simple to reauthor as DVD, the day you get a DVD writer (remember - it's not if that's gonna happen - it's when, right? )

  4. Can I capture in CVD format (CVD 1/2 D1) with ATI AIW rage 128? How can I do?

I use Windows XP SP2, my cpu is Amd 750 MHz, hard disk 20GB 7200.

    Thanks a lot!

Don't know nothing about ATI cards, unfortunately. What does you manual say?

With your systems spec, I seriously doubt it. AFAIK, AIW cards don't do hardware (at least not 100%) mpeg encoding, so depend on your processor, which is on the lean side these days.
