  1. Ive just bought a pioneer 108 dvd yesterday from disccity and i cant get it to work.

I had a pioneer 106 which did a full dvd at 4x in 30mins (read + write), this writer at 8x should takes 15 mins, it took 45 mins to read and crashed after an hour or so to write the disk (i let it run this long to see if it would eventually finish)

i tried it with nero 6 and clone dvd(it crashes clone after a few seconds)

does anyone think its faulty and should be returned or will a firmware update sort it out

Im asking because if i send it back and its tested and they say its ok il get cherged a testing fee

    all help would be appreciated

    Hello,

First thing I did with mine was to do a firmware update.

There are writing issues expalined on the update website that could well be due to the problems you are experiencing.

    If this fails, return it!

    Good Luck

  3. If you purchased the OEM DVR-108 it is riplocked from the factory. You will need to update it with one of the hacked firmwares for it to rip (read) faster.

Be careful just because your 106 burned at 30 min. does not mean an 8x will take 15 and so on. All Pioneer drives 8x and up use a write strategy called Zone Constant Linear Velocity. What this means is that If you set your drive to burn at lets say 16x here is what you really get:

    1%-10% 6x
    11%-50% 8x
    51%-90% 12x
    91% to 100% 16x

Speed shift points stay the same no matter what speed you choose. If you choose 8x it just doesn't do the 12x and 16x speed shifts.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!
