  1. How do I back up the hard drive to DVD-R? I thought I saw someplace in Nero to do it, but I can't find it now.

Nero has it's own software called BackItUp, which can do this for you.
    If in doubt, Google it.

use Barts Pebuilder to create a bootable xp enviroment cd and add the nero plug-in.
Other plug-ins can provide access to adaware and anti-virus free software

When booted with this cd you can then burn any or all of the hdd to cd or dvd.

assuming you have a free copy of nero from a purchased burner then it is all free.

three folders to copy to restore system:
    1. Documents and Settings
    2. Program files
    3. Windows

This is not the same as writing an image file or compressed backup type file. Just a uncompressed data copy.

There was a post some time back giving step by step method of backup via a dual boot xp system, this is basically the same without the need to have a dual boot system.

    Pay for it?

    (Is this a trick question?)
