I use them both. Rip to hard drive using DVDDecrypter then use Shrink to create the DVD files and burn (using NERO). This is a lot quicker for me than using Shrink alone. I find that Shrink says it will take 1 to 1.5 hours to do the job whilst DVDDecrypter rips to HD in about 10 mins then it takes Shrink about 20 mins to sort out the files for burning- however please note I have only ever used shrink to compress as much as 79% and I always take out the languages I don't want and sometimes the subtitles.
DVD Decrypter will rip the DVD to your hard drive as an ISO or as files for you to use with another app - unless the ISO will fit on one DVDR5.
DVD Decrypter does not compress any of the DVD but Shrink does - that's the difference - feel free to correct me anyone if I am wrong.

  3. If you create an ISO image with DVD Shrink, you can also use DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO file.

When it comes to "what to use to make a backup", that's the main difference, yes.

That's the way I do it. I fired Nero off my computer when I found out how easy it was to burn with DVD Decrypter. I've never had a bad burn with DD and had several with Nero, so goodbye Nero.
