  1. Ok.. this is strange to say the least....

I've been capping with ATI MMC 9.03 from a VHS source to yield MPEG2-DVD files.

Twice so far, I've encountered a strange phenomenon... When I play back my MPEG2 file in either ATI File Player or Windows Media Player... I get the "DIVX Video" logo in the bottom right hand corner.

This signifies that the DIV X codec is being used but WHY?

I'm not even sure if I ever installed the codec... but apparently I guess I did... but why is it showing up when I play my MPEG2? The first time this happened I was testing so I just recapped and the issue disappeared with the new cap.

    Has anyone seen this?

  2. Sounds like a bug where your preset used ended up being MPEG-4 instead of MPEG-2. The DivX logo is added only by the DivX decoder (not at capture time).

  4. hmmm.. Thanks....

I've tried to rectify the situation with a re-install of all ATI's s/w.. including GFX card drivers (might as well). So far the phenomenon has not occurred.

But great point about the possibility that my preset mapping got corrupted somehow and ended up capping to MPEG4. It explains alot especially when I tried loading the file into TMPGEnc DVD Author and it errored out but the file was still playable with Windows Media Player and ATI Fileplayer...

Could be a bug in software though...

I've actually also had system crashes when fooling around with VBR MIN MAX settings. Don't get me wrong.. my system is very stable... just weird things are happening.

The nature of video is "weird" ... especially higher end stuff like "ATI" ..... 8.7 is most stable ... 9.02 I know to work here too .... worth a shot.

  6. Doh!

I think my "crashing" is due to the fact that "Fastwrites" were turned on in ATI control panel. I used to have it off because you can't cap in any Ulead or Adobe s/w with it on. It'll crash the system. Don't ask me why.... I didn't think ATI's own s/w would be affected! Such cruel irony.

Anyways, I'm 90% sure this is the cause of the crashing... we'll see how it goes. Man this was bothering alot.... I was thinking about reinstalling again or checking to see if my GFX card was overheating due to the back-to-back-to-back MPEG encoding that was going on. MMC would at random moments crash and take down my system.... Never during capture but always while messing around with the bitrate settings or having the app open while I was working in DVD-Lab.

    anyways....
