okay, i have had my dvd burner for a LONG time now and it pretty ancient I bet when compared to the new models. I belive its a Pioneer A03 or something like that... not sure...

anyway, really the only program I use is DVDShrink. I basically just delete the menus, extras and hope that it all fits without shrinking the quality... but if so, I have no other choice... usually not noticable anyway cuz its minor...

anyway, iv done this same process forever now and I recently bought a new computer and put my old dvd-r burner in the new computer.

I downloaded a trial version of Nero and downloaded DVDShrink and it all works perfect, but after I rip the DVD and i go to burn the DVD onto the DVD-R disc, it only burns at 1x. And I have to use IMGTool to put on dvd-r. I remember before I could burn faster and after DVDShrink was done it would do its own thing and ask for me to put in DVD-R and DVDShrink would burn onto dvd-r disc....

now it tells me when its done, but doesnt burn onto disc like before.... and when I use IMGTool, it will only burn at 1x... nothing more...

i thought it was my media... but i have tried a few different kinds now with now luck...

    any ideas?

what brands ae you using? I'm pretty sure you could flash the firmware if it is a 103 so that its not as picky regarding media

DVDinfo will tell you what drive it is and which firmware it's using

I had the same problem with my old 103 and Nero

    What about PIO mode?

Is your drive in PIO mode instead a DMA mode?

Can you select higher speeds, but then only burn at 1x's?

    Check the Device Manager.

The A03 dvd burner supports 2x burning. Unfortunately when you put in 4x media (which seems to be the lowest people are selling cheaply) the burner only burns at 1x. It may be time to retire the drive since it is getting hard to find 2x media.

good call . that's the reason I got rid of mine

I still have a few 1x/2x blanks lying around as I don't want to burn at that speed anymore

What media are you using? some 4x's media is 1x, "2.4x" and 4x instead of 1x, 2x, and 4x.

I think maxell does this I am not sure which ither brands do.
    snappy phrase

    I don't know what you're talking about.

I foresaw the problem and bought allot of 2x TDK DVD-Rs when one of the on-line stores (Rima? $0.20/disc) had a fire sale on their 2x media. At the time I remember thinking that the 4x Ritek, TY, and Verbatims all burned at 1x. I was using 2x Maxells.

Yesterday I went looking for more 2x media and could only find 2x TDKs for $4 a disc. At that price I think you are better of getting a new burner and take advantage of the faster media.

I was never able to burn 4x discs at 2x. Sorry.
