  1. Has anyone had any luck in copying from the HDD to a VCD. I can make a VCD by recording directly from input source. But when I try and make a copy from HDD to VCD, I get the following error message.

"The function you specified is not supported due to the mismatch of the disc format."

I have made 2 minute test recordings using all of the recording modes (HQ/SP/LP/EP/SLP). If I try to copy any of the tests to a VCD I get the error message above.

  2. The recorder is not doing any encoding when it records to the DVD (VCD) from the hard drive. It is doing the encoding with hardware when recording from the source. Thus even though one of the test modes you tried is most likely 352 by 240 by AC3 audio. VCD spec is 44.1 Khz audio MP2 as I recall it. Thus the mismatch message because of the audio as the most likely candidate.

Is it that you need VCD for someone else? Disk cost?

By me the cost of DVD Blanks Vs CD blanks for amount of video is highly skewed towards DVD media.

IOW what you are trying isn't setup in the recorder's firmware & probaly hardware. Basicly you bought a DVD recorder not a VCD recorder (IE Terrapin for example)

It is possible, only possible, that someone has hacked the firmware so that you can capture VCD to the HDD and then burn it too. But I don't know of anyone doing that, you'd have to search.

    Cheers

I want the record to HDD first, so that I can do some editing before making a final save. I have a lot of pool video's on tape that I would like to edit and put on CD's. I will probably put 4 or 5 matches on a DVD. But It would have been nice to have each match on it's own dedia.

I think you may have answered my question. The amount of people wanting to do this is very small. Spending a lot of time on this firmware capability isn't warrented. But, why would they even bother to have the capability of making a VCD if they weren't going to allow the ability to edit. The biggest reason I bought a DVD recorder with a hard drive was for it's editing capabilites.

It's definitely not the cost of the media. Cost per megabyte of DVD media is about 3 times less than CD media. IOW our local Staples has 25 pks of DVD for $7.95. Which would be equivalent to about 150 CD's.

  4. I suspect that the ability to make a vcd was available in the chipset they are using. Basic VCD difference from DVD is the audio. So if the chipset supports it and it was easy to implement then the "Why Not" probably came into play but not enough to make them want to spend much time or money on a incremental thing. But it still becomes something for the spec sheet & advertising to use.

VCD as I see it was never big in the US Market, that isn't true in Asia but...

Here in the US VCD was popular with hobbiest types when DVD burners were very expensive and Media was high cost too.

Now that ability to make a DVD is inexpensive and given that a DVD version of VCD is compatible with DVD Players whereas there is no guarantee that VCDs will play in a standalone player why make them.

If I'm happy with VCD quality I'd still put it on a DVD so a movie doesn't have to be split or so that 12 half hour episodes can go on one disc. Storage enters into thatequation for me. Enough so that I'm now when time permits going through my old VCDs and taking the ones I want to keep, Can't recreate in a better quality IOWs, I'm putting them onto DVDs and freeing up shelf space. twelve jewel cases of 1/2 hr. episodes vs one dual disc DVD case with nice cover...hmmm...

Then just because of dumpster divers I scratch the top off of the CDs, same reason I shred credit card statements etc.

    Cheers

    hi
i know i'm replying years later but here's an answer.
the source media of the hdd recording determines if you can make a vcd or dvd.
you can't fool the machine by trying to copy a dvd to hdd and then burn to vcd.
only a vcd recording on the hdd will burn to vcd.
to copy it must the same media the original recording was.
dvd to dvd vcd to vcd and cd to cd.
why those limitations on cross platforms (mismatch) only liteon KNEW :>)
    still love my liteons

This is like a time capsule. I wonder where johnahl and his VCD machine is now, and if both are doing OK...
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".
