    Hi all,

This is my first post on the DVD Recorder forum - i have just got my first recorder the 4kus from Asda.

    I have a few questions:

I understand that the 4kus dvr-230 is the same as the ilo DVDR04. Is this true? Will firmware upgrades for the ilo DVDR04 work for the 4kus?

It also has LiteOn on the back. Is the 4kus equivlent to a particular LiteOn model? If so which one?

What is, therfore, the releationship between ilo/4kus/LiteOn?

I did a test recording from sky+. Whilst the sky+ was outputing 16:9 the recording was 4:3. In fact it was anamorphically squashed side to side so that if the TV was set to 16:9 it looked ok but all the flags in the IFO & VOBs were 4:3. This is not a major problem but very frustrating as i have to take the DVD to the PC to sort it out with IfoEdit if i intend to give the DVD to someone with a 4:3 TV... Anyway is this just the way it is or am i missing something?

Also the 4kus does not perform widescreen switching. I have it set up to output 16:9, i have the TV set up to switch & i have good scart cables. Even with widescreen retail DVDs the dvd player does not switch the TV to 16:9 - i have to do this manually. Is this a known issue?

Lastly, i have heard that some dvd recorders encode to mpeg on the fly when performing pass-through on the scarts. As a result the quality via pass-through is not as good as a direct connection. Does the 4kus/ilo do this? (i think it might). In any event is the pass-through RGB?

    Thanks

4kus is another brand used by Lite-On to sell their products at lower prices, but that brand has never appeared in the US so far. iLo is a new brand name used by Lite-On to sell their standalone DVD recorders at Wal-Mart stores in the US. So that's how they are related to each other. You can probably check out both Lite-On and iLo's websites to find out which model corresponds to yours:

Sorry cannot help you with other questions.

I just wish they could think of better names for these machines than "I-Low" and "Fork-Us". Sounds like a bad law firm.

Thanks for the info. From those links i suspect the 4kus dvr-230 corresponds to the LVW-5002 and the DVDR04

  5. Hi - The DVR-230 you got in the UK, does it have a "just fit" mode for timer recording - ie rather than set 1/2/4/6 hours, you just say "fit"?

It's one feature some of the liteons have (as does panasonic) and I think means you can get a 2:30 film at near-2 hour quality without dropping resolution to the 4hr mode?

    Thanks
    Nigel.
