    It depends on your firmware.

also depends on the disc - I have a Lite-On 16x drive, on some discs I can sustain 10+x ripping speed, some discs average out to 3x, most around 6-7x.

Like housepig my results are simular. Have an old 2.4x ricoh and a 8x liteon both rip at approx the same speed. As a test even ripped 2 disks at once. Still both ripped at 6 to 10x. Until the 1st disk was done then the program Dycrpt.. didn't know what to do with the second so it stopped at that point

That is never encouraged, unless you are using two different computers.

I think I start at about 3x and max at 8x on my Liteon. my samsung was excellent till it shook a screw out of the laser!. I tried screwing it back in but snagged the ribbon cable slightly and it died

that was a year ago and I still have it in the cupboard as I hate throwing stuff out

If your system has balls go right ahead. I do it all the time.

What Houspig says.. My Lite-On rips at 6-8x normal. On some few single sided New or Very good condition used (Why Used? Cheaper of course) It has hit up to 15X+ on rare occasions Peak of course. Single sided disks usually take me 5 to 8 minutes and I figure that's OK.

    Cheers

  12. I use the Pioneer 108 to rip and consistently get 8-10x.

  13. With my Liteon 163 with updated firmware, I rip full single layer burned discs in about 5 1/2 minutes. Worst case scenario, a large 8gb commercial dual layer disc can take up to about 18 minutes to do a full rip

I have a LiteOn 166S and 167T both firmware-flashed, and peak at between 15X and 15.5X for DVD-Rs, and generally in the order of 6X - 12X for commercial DVD-5/9.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  16. I've got 3 raptors in my pc. its looking like Jurassic Park lol

I do notice however that the newer 74gb raptors make less noise than the 36 gb ones

    Yup, I also have a 167T with flashed f/w.
When I rip a single layer DVD (-/+R or video), I leave the room. I always have the feeling that the computer will explode
Kind of noisy, but fast. 5 min for a single layer, under 15 for full double layer.
