I've got a movie in .mkv format which I would like to burn to VCD. I've d/l'ed the correct codec pack (Matroska), so I can watch the movie in Windows Media Player, TMPGEnc can encode the movie fine, the only problem is the subtitles. When I watch the movie in WMP, a green arrow appears in the system tray in the bottom-right. If I click the arrow, I get the option of which language the subs should be in- the problem is the subs do not appear in the resulting .mpg file. Looking at other guides, they say I should have a .sub or .nfo file for the subs, but I don't have either- the subs appear to be in the moive file. Is there anyway to extract the subs form the .mkv file, or do I have to try and find a subtitle file or something?

You can use mkvextract to extract them, that is assuming that they are text and not VOBSubs.

I did some tests the other day and it seems to me that directvobsub doesn't work too good with TMPGEnc. One thing that I did notice though is that ffdshow works ok, however that is of no use if the video is something that it can't decode.

I tested v2.33 and a cvs build of dvobsub by the way. Maybe older versions are ok with TMPGEnc?

I'm afraid that they are- it says "DirectVobsub" when you hover over the arrow. Is there anyway to extract the subtitles from the movie now that they are Vobsubs?

DirectVOBSub handles both VOBSub's and text sub formats. So the fact that it is being loaded doesnt really mean anything.

There is as far as I know no way to extract VOBSub's from a mkv back to idx/subs. It is a 1 way process, as such if you think you may want the sub/idx in the future I suggest that you keep a copy if muxing to mkv.
