I have a ton of these video files on a Mac computer and I burned them to a disc and then I brought them up to my new computer which has windows xp on it and at first the files would not play in windows media player but i downloaded a whole bunch codes decompressors and then it worked when i played it on it. But it does not work on TMPGenc or Virtual Dub. TMPGenc says file is unsupported and virtual dub mentions something about decompressors. I would like it if I can get both programs to work for these files. How can I make them work?

yo,
More info needed. What are 'these video files' - i.e. what type of video & audio do they contain?
MOVs?

When VDub complained about a missing decompressor. It should have said what one. Sounds like they are avi's though, which I would have thought a little odd for a mac.

yes these are avi files downloaded from a mac, burned on a disc and copy onto my hard drive on my computer whichs has windows xp. Virtual Dub pops up this exact message " Couldn't locate decompressor for format "XVID" (Unknown)uires Videos for Windows (VFW) Compatible codec to decompress video. Direct show codecs, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable"

GSpot is a very handy addition to your toolbox for seeing what codecs you need for given files. As for the unsupported error, if installing the right codec still doesn't work, https://www.videohelp.com/tmpgenc.htm#problems might have some useful information.
If in doubt, Google it.
