I had a divx avi initially, which was about 690 MB and thus fit on a 80min CD. But I wanted to make a VCD out of it. So I converted it into a MPEG-1 using TMPGEnc and Virtualdub. After I obtained my mpeg, I noticed it was very minutely a bit blurry and amazingly was 920 MB ! Thus it means that I can no longer fit it on 1 CD. I also tried adding this mpeg in the VCD burning template of Nero and EasyCd Creator, and it does easily recognise it although its too long.

Hence I tried some mpeg editing tools such as ones in TMPGEnc and IfilmEdit. After I split my mpeg into 2 smaller mpegs, I noticed that when I drag these mpegs in Nero or ECDC, it gives me “Invalid format” suggesting that the editing has stuffed up the format of the files.

Well, that means that I will have to encode them again thus spending so much time (5-6 hours) AGAIN. Could someone suggest a technique or suggestion as to how I can cut the big mpeg into smaller mpegs without altering the VCD compatibility of the smaller mpegs.

  2. DivX encodes better then VCD, if you want to know how big the file size will be in VCD, just look at the movie length, and calculate 1min = 10mb, it's a standard.

if your CDRW supports 90min CDR's, you could tyr burning that 920mb VCD you have, into a single 90min CDR media.

  3. most cds over 80 min are either unburnable after 82.5 min or unreadable after that mark.

Besides, if you are making compliant vcds then yes, 1 mb = 10 mb and that is no shocker.
If you want to lower the file size without reencoding, you can but it will turn it nonstandard though.
Just go into mpeg tools and use multiples and use the vid+aud source as the same clip but choose stream type-
    MPEG-1 System (automatic)
