  1. Mod, please place this in the appropriate forum, if this is not correct. I recently purchased the LiteOn LDW 5005 recorder. I have a Panasonic PV-GS120 camcorder I have been taping basketball games with. I have no problems copying my game tapes over to the 5005. But, I thought I would make some additional copies for some of the players, and figured I could use DVD shrink with my computer to make the copies as well as the LDW5005, again. I have a LiteOn 411s that I place my copied DVD into, and when starting to use DVD shrink, I received this error. "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue; Invalid DVD navigation structure" I am using RIDATA 8x DVD+R discs. I thought, hmm,,,lets try DVD decrypter by itself, picked the read iso protocol, and it filled the buffer, but then the program "stopped", stalled my computer, and I had to do a hard reboot to get going again. Any ideas? Can DVD's made with the LDW5005 not be copied elsewhere?(and yes, I did finalize the disc upon completion), or is it, perhaps the media Im using? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,

Try ripping with the latest version of DVD Decrypter and see how you go. This is the third post about issues with this particular recorder and it's output in the past week. I think I'll be scratching it off my wish list.

I know that this is not going to be of much help, but I noticed you were not getting much response, and I do at least have some experience with this DVD recorder.

I own the Lite-On 5005. I have used it to back-up many of my old VHS tapes and my entire laser disc collection. I typically use DVD-R discs to do this, and almost all of these have been Ritek Ridata G04 discs.

On quite a few of these, I was then able to "rip" the new burned DVD into my PC. I never experienced any problem doing this, in fact, in all of my attempts. I used DVDShrink for every one of these, in order to get it onto my hard drive. Because I never had any problem with Shrink, I did not ever give DVDDecrypter a try. I simply never had the need to. I suspect it would have done the trick equally well, but I cannot state this with any authority.

After some of these films were on my hard drive I used Nero's Nerovision Express program to do some editing, re-authoring, and customizing. I often added menus (I did not care for the generic ones that the 5005 uses). In some cases (some of my laserdisc backups) I combined 4 discs of a single film into two blank DVDs.

I guess what I am saying is that it can work, at least it did on my 5005.

Could your lack of success be due to one of the following, I wonder?

-Failure to finalize the disc (assuming it is a DVD-R or a DVD+R blank)? (EDIT: I just re-read your post, and you state very clearly that you did finalize. Oh, well... END OF EDIT.)

-Lousy media (this causes more headaches than almost any other issue.) I used the Riteks exclusively because they are so compatible with so many burners, so many standalone players, and until very recently they had an excellent reputation for quality control (reliability from one run to the next). (EDIT: You are not using lousy media, with Riteks. BUT, I have not tried 8X discs. Still I cannot think that SHOULD cause this sort of problem, since the player itself should have slowed the burning speed back down. Oh, well... END OF EDIT.)

-Burning too close to the extreme outer edges of the blank DVD? I believe the 5005 has issues with this. I learned that EVERY TIME I completely filled a disc all of the way to the maximum time allowed, I had problems. Essentially, I had a coaster. So, if I set it for the 2 hour speed, and I literally went to max out the DVD, and recorded until the unit stopped itself and displayed "Disc Full," I was then able to "finalize" the disc, according to the Lite-On 5005. It would show me the finalizing progress, in percentages. It would even report that the "finalizing has been completed." But, I now had an almost useless disc. It would not play in five out of the six DVD players I own. It would not play on my computer burners, either (I have two). It would only play in the Lite-On 5005. EVERY TIME. I am convinced that the unit was "overburning." It was letting me save video to the extreme outer edge, so there was NOT enough room to finalize. Even worse, the unit was not reporting any error or indication of this when I instructed it to finalize. It was essentially trying to write the "finalizing information" or the required data to the same exact place where stuff already had been written, so it made a useless coaster.

-The above issue is the only "anomaly" I noticed with the 5005, but I found it to be true in case after case. I could not leave the unit on for unattended recording overnight, unless I pre-programmed it for a "timed recording," so it would stop the burning prior to reaching the very last few minutes of the disc.

Hope something here is of some benefit. If not, I hope that someone else may have a clue as to why you had no success.

I've had a 5101 for about 3 weeks now. Don't know if it's the same problem, but I've tried opening the DVDs it makes with TMPGEnc DVD Author and TMPGEnc mpeg editor. Both give a navigation error. I have been able to open the vobs directly, but that gives an 'stutter' at each point where the vob ends and the next one starts.

So far, the best solution I've found for me is to use DVD-Lab to open the vobs and convert them to elementary streams, then either use those streams or multiplex them back to mpeg for further uses.

    Okay.

    This is what I Done.

The Liteon recorders create a modified structure on DvD discs.

As Opposed to the standard VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders, it creates

    VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS.

Thats why DvD SHrink is telling you its not a correct navigation structure, Shrink is looking for the audio and video ts folders.

What I did was DvD Decrypter my recorded disc (with the VIDEO_RM strcture)
In IFO Mode, created one large Vob.

Inserted it into DvD Lab, allow it to Demux etc.

Create ncie fancy menus, chapter selection menus etc etc.

Then exported the project to a dir on my hdd, burned with nero.

And its working perfect, in MANY Dvd players/ps2s/xbox.

Which I might add never played the disc with the VIDEO_RM structure.
