I haven't encoded with widescreen before and am wondering if I can mix widescreen with standard 4:3 on the same DVD-R disc??
Also will this cause any problems with playback in terms of quality of anything. I have checked the widescreen footage on my PC and it looks fine, but I'm not sure how it will look on a non widescreen TV??

You need authoring tools that support using both. Ulead DVD workshop is one.

Gui for dvdauthor (free) will also support this (multiple vts).

TMPGEnc DVD Author can handle 4:3 and Widescreen as well as DVD LAB Pro. Both of them will use different titlesets for each. The basic version of DVD LAB will not as it is limited to a single titleset.
Differences in video quality shouldn't be an issue
