  1. I don't know why qpel is so prevelant, but it is, and my KISS player just can't handle them. I'm to the point of considering buying another player, just to be able to play more things.

I've poked around the forums and the DVD player sections a bit, and have verified that my current KISS player just isn't going to ever handle qpel. It also sounds like, for the foreseeable future, KISS isn't going to add this to new players.

So for those of you who keep on top of these things, instead of just reviewing the field once a year or so when considering a new player, is anybody willing to speak up on which manufacturers -do- have players to support qpel, and what kind of players they have?

So far I have managed to find RJ Tech players listed here, at least one of which is supposed to be able to handle qpel, but I've not yet managed to track down which specific models do so, and it sounds from the reviews that the quality isn't too great.

What options are out there? Which specific models can handle qpel? Does anybody have anything nice to say about any of them? And should I stop asking questions, now?

  5. KiSS players suffer from 1 significant problem: terrible firmware that does not fix old bugs but also introduces new ones.
So, I strongly advise against dealing with any kind of KiSS hardware.
Last year they made a firmware. The only thing it did was ruined remote control's sensibility. They quickly removed the software. A year later they release the next version which brough tears to everyone. New problems and no improvements whatsoever. And they sell this garbage for twice as much as better players cost now.
Finally, I ended up with RJ-800DVX for $80 and QPEL, and gave mine away for free to a relative who has never had a DVD player before.
Since I brought my Kiss to more or less stale condition thanks to firmware mods, my relative, as a beginner, is fine with it.
But we, advanced users, should not give kiss any more of our hard earned money.

  6. I haven't watched any QPEL on TV to be able to say if it makes much of a difference, there exist good rips without it.

The thing about QPEL is that it requires more processing power and therefore DVD players that can play QPEL are generally more powerful, and therefore somewhat better.

I know that the Philips 642 doesn't play QPEL, but you can buy a more expensive Philips player that does.
