    OK...

Recorded with Hauppauge winpvr 250. Mpeg 2 vbr 4250 - 8500, 256 kbs audio. Menu created with TMPGenc DVD Author. This creates files that will fit 3 edited 1 hour TV episodes onto 1 DVD.

So I load the DVD into my 5 disc panasonic to watch it on TV. The first episode has about 20 seconds of blocking that flashes off and on, the the rest of the episode plays OK. I can deal with this . Pretty fast and then it's done.

    But...

In the 2nd episode around half way through the typical blocking occurs and even when fast forwarding it's still there, so now I'm thinking bad disc.

    So...

I load the DVD onto the PC, and play it through InterVideo WinDVD 4 and I'm expecting to see the blocking (to confirm that it's the disc) but there is none!

    Now...

I'm not sure why the panasonic player - that worked well with a different DVD earlier (also recorded with the same settings) is acting up. This DVD player is not new and has worked fine with 100's of recorded and made DVD's. Model CV-51

Has anyone else had a blocking problem on one device but not on another with the same DVD? Why would this happen?

Same brand disc? Same burn speed? Same bitrate? Same software?

    Yes to all.

That's what makes this this a real pain to figure out. Perhaps a setting on the player is wacked???? How can you tell?

It seems you were right. I burned another disc using the same file that TMPGenc DVD Author had created. This one played perfectly on the DVD player

I'd still like to know why a DVD disc can be bad on the companent player but work perfectly on the PC player.

    Thanks for the assistance

I think it has something to do with the laser on a burner having a higher intensity than one you would find on a player. He didn't mention that he played it back in his burner or in a DVD-ROM but I got a sneaking suspicion it was the burner.

Burners have more precise optics and better detectors, generally, than playback-only devices. They need to, in order to do their job.

Yes it was a burner on the PC.

    Very interesting.

Do they make a program that will verify the data is correct and will play on the avg component DVD player? Or what DVD player has a strong laser like the PC burner's?

Otherwise it sucks that the only way to review a DVD is by playing the entire disc in the component DVD player

Not that I'm aware of, this is one of the issues I'm starting to deal with as I get my digital business off the ground. What do you tell people when there disc doesn't play in their DVD player?

I'm already in business and I can tell you some people can be quite anal no matter how much you explain it to them.

Some dvd players are picky about the BRAND (media code) of a DVD-R. Reburning on a different brand usually fixes the problem.
Seeing as how TY disks are the best, and almost ALL players can playback DVD-R disks, I would use those for your business, coalman.
