I ran into this backing up Catwoman and Dodgeball. I use anydvd with clonedvd to backup my DVD originals. I am using a Sony Dual Layer burner and the media is 4x Riteks. I ran into this issue first with new 8x Ritek media, thought that the media may be bad or it was burning at too high a speed, so I pulled out some previous 4x Riteks that I had and the same thing happened.
What happens is the movie will play most of the way through till it gets towards the end of the movie and then the movie will freeze intermitently till the end. What could be causing this? It does not happen to all my backups, just here and there.
With Catwoman I created an ISO with clonedvd then burned it to dvd-r. I went ahead and burned another copy but the same thing happened. I thought that maybe my ISO was bad, but I mounted it with Alchohol 120% and the movie played fine throughout the movie.

Its the dvd, u need to buy the real good ones. I had this problem too, my title is in the forum called " y does my backup freeze " . The good dvd's are not that much and it worked for me. I dont get that problem anymore. Try it

No, I have an inkjet printer that prints directly on my printable dvds. Good thought though.

I always thought that Ritek were one of the best. Moneys not an issue cause like you said, it ain't that much more. What brand do you suggest?

As always, some burners are better than others with certain media also, so not knowing your burner model makes it harder to diagnose. I see it is a Sony, what model? What media codes are the Ritek discs? +R or -R media?
Also, I get the best quality of burns when I burn with DVD Decrypter, ISO mode. Nero burns, for example, don't burn quite as nice (looking at PI/PO tests, anyway). I've seen in some cases where the burning program can make a LARGE difference in burn quality, although the burning program used is probably not going to be the deciding factor most of the time. -
Here are some computer specs:
Dell 8100 P4 2.6ghz.
1 Gig of ram
Sony DVDRW DRU-700A
320 Gig of drive space total.
I never had issue's with Ritek before and that is all I used. I have burned over 300 Riteks.
At first I thought it was due to the new 8x Ritek that I bought thinking it was burning too fast, but I had some Ritek 4x laying around and it did the same thing. I should be able to burn movies at 8x with no issues I would think.
The movies play fine until the last 10 minutes of it. The picture and sound get real jerky/pixilated and it will freeze then unfreeze etc. Really weird.
So far I have only this with 2 movies, but I did not test them all that I have burned lately, just some of them and they play fine. -
Skipping and pixelating is definitely caused by bad burns, errors near the outer edge of the disc. Only other real possibility is labels, and you already ruled that out.
Download a program called Nero CD/DVD Speed and run a transfer rate test on one of your problem discs, a good burn will have a smooth read speed curve with only very small or no spikes in the curve. -
Is that how the dvd's get read then from inner to outer? It does seem like bad burns. I don't know why, but something is not correct.
-
yes, inside first. Look on the bottom of a disc that didn't use the full disc and you'll see where it stopped burning near the outer edge.

Ritek is USUALLY one of the best, but lately certain Riteks haven't been so good.
Go to your local store and buy some Fuji or Verbatim media, or anything that you KNOW is made by Taiyo Yuden. See if that helps. -
I doubt Clonedvd is to blame, but if you are interested in trying other programs, have you used the latest version of DVD Shrink yet? It's a great program, and if you use Deep Analysis and pick the appropriate AEC settings, it does an awesome job. I have great luck using it, I just transcode with DVD Shrink to fit onto a single layer disc and have it create an ISO image, then burn the ISO image with DVD Decrypter. Very simple and has always given me the best results, it has worked better than creating DVD files and using another burning program to burn those.

It's the media. Ritek is going downhill. I've had luck, but they are moving down the list.
As mentioned in other threads, pretty much anything MADE IN JAPAN is going to be good now a days. TY has been very good for many people, my next order will be for them. -
While it's obscure and certainly less common, I have found some DVD players to be causing skipping problems which I previously thought HAD to be media.
I'll digress a little just to get the point across
I have one DVD player at home that intermittently starts skipping and freezing my backups anywhere after 90 minutes, across 4 different brands of media. I pull the DVD out, place it in my other player (which sits on the shelf above the first one) and FF to the exact spot where it skipped and watch through to the end without a problem. Initially thought it was media, so changed media. Again, same thing, but as I said, only intermittently, and not every time.
One day, I happened to have a pedestal fan going because inside the house was quite hot, and sure enough, no skipping. So the next day I tried with another that I knew had skipped previously, and pointed the pedestal fan directly at the DVD player. No skipping. So one of my DVD Players struggles with overheating problems while playing burnt discs it would seem.
As I said, my other DVD Player plays them no worries, and the one that does skip and freeze plays any backup flawlessly if it has the fan pointing at it.
Go figure. If in doubt, Google it. -

I'm lucky too,But do have more problems then I did 1 year ago, I use about 2000 DVDs a month, Im not about to change DVD brands yet.

I scanned one of the bad Ritek discs in DVDInfoPro and couldn't beleive the trouble it was experiencing. I let the scan go for over an hour (Pioneer A06) and it was only about 23% through the disk and loaded with errors. DVD playback locked at the menu, for the disks that got that far. -
No, some drive/firmware/media combinations just don't burn well at certain speeds. My NEC can burn some -R discs at 8x that my Benq 822 can't burn worth a shet at 2x, my Benq just happens to not be a very good burner at most -R media. Maybe your burner sucks with that media, I said it earlier that different burners will work differently with different discs. You should also look into updating your burner to the latest firmware for best compatibility, that will probably increase your odds for success.

I've also been getting skipping/freezing towards end of movie. Was using memorex 4.7/8x dvdrs. Tried burning/reading at slowest speeds and still get those errors. I use laptops dvd player to read and my I/O magic external dvdwriter to write(use anydvd(newest trial version 4.5 i think/clonedvd2).
I tried fujifilm dvdr(upto 8x/ data/video disc),and tried burning/reading at 8x. couple of movies did oky,but on others still got freezing at end of movie. I read somewhere on fuji it depends where its made if its better than one made somewhere else(ones i bought are from tawain).
anywho this is real frustrating, not sure what the deal is? Firmware on dvdwriter is recent. Not sure if the problem is reading to fast or most likely the writing phase? Is possible rate transfer form HD to writer is hung up somwhere? I probably need to try and clean lense, but thats probably not it,but????
I put stuff in profile for what dvdwriter I have but its(I/O magic external usb writer dual format supports dvdr/w dvd +/-rw 8x) -
You're using an IOMagic burner, at maximum speed, and you're SURPRISED that the burns don't work?
Fuji +R 8x media, at 4x, will work reliably no matter what - so long as your burner doesn't suck. -
Could it be that the movies you are trying to back up are dirty or have fingerprints on it,have you checked for that?
-
Sorry gurn,
I don't have the cash flow like u probably got. It was on sale, and thats all I could afford at that time..So,be my guest and buy me a topend burner. I'm not a hardcore computer enthusiast..You just made it sound like I was a fool for buying I/O magic. I also said I burned at slowest speed and still got those errors(but most likely dirt/bad media).anywho sorry for a negative post, its 136am here..blah blah blah..
yeah, louth... I probably should check the cleanlieness of the discs, just dont think about it I guess. -
Guess I'll throw in my 10cents worth in here also. One opinion said "better discs or keep it under 4gig". Well, with some really crap media, even the 4gig benchmark is still too high. Got a handful of Ridisc(Ritek) given to me to burn through this week, and they were producing 100% coasters. Eventually got a couple of watchable burns by going down to 3.5gigs. Yes, thats all they're good for. 3.5 gigs max ! On a cost per gigabyte basis, decent media is cheaper !!!!!

mr.d,
In no way am I suggesting that you buy a new burner. None of us is made of money. (Although you could have ordered a Liteon to be delivered to your home cheaper than the IOMagic, but what's done is done!)
What I am suggesting is that you accept the limitations of the drive. If it burns at 4x, be happy with 4x. It's a couple extra minutes for a good burn. Accept that the drive, despite being labeled 8x, can't REALLY do 8x. Just live with it. I have a drive that supposedly does 16x and dual-layer. I've never tried to do either. I burn at 4x, and don't even verify my burns afterwards - because they're ALWAYS flawless. I'm willing to wait a few extra minutes, and pay a couple extra bucks for media, to know that I never have to second-guess myself.
I just buy Fuji 8x +R media, burn it at 4x, and never EVER EVER have a problem.
