  1. Do DVD RWs lose quality with repeated use if you are using them to transfer video to the computer?

    Hello,

I don't believe so - when it can't write anymore it will just cease to function. It won't degrade like vhs

Though I still don't know what the practical real world limit is on rw discs - they say something like a thousand uses.....

I've had some Memorex discs go squirrelly after as little as 10 passes. Others have reported less. Usually you can get them going again if you can reformat them in your computer though I've had some programs reject them for reformatting as well. One of the old versions of Sonic Record Now Deluxe (version 7, I think) seems to be able to do it all the time though, so I use that. I've been gradually getting rid of those Memorex discs in favor of DVD-RAM which I've never experienced a format problem in over 16 months of use.

Be sure to handle all media carefully. Dust, fingerprint, scratches, etc. can have a determental effect. If necessary clean them as per the maufactorers instructions

Phase change is unstable. No surprise. Most often, you'll see "spots" (like mini craters) form in the crystals. Can happen even on old, but unused media. 10,000 rewrites is a pipe dream. Several dozen, maybe several hundred, is probably the limit on many of them, at least according to reliable user reports. And the better media you buy, the longer it should last.

Most of the 2x RW media seems better than the 1x too, in terms of quality (although my SONY RW are fine).
