VCD's playing oddly on DVD-Phillips

I burn the VCD's from Mpeg using nero 5.5, and when i play them in the phillips stand alone dvd player, they play in black and white, and the picture bounces/rolls up and down? I am new to burning VCD's. Is there something I am doing wrong?
Please help if you can.

You are using the wrong format. There are 2 formats pal and nstc, you are using the wrong one for your tele. So all you have to do is switch!

I have a Phillips 701 stand-alone DVD.. I thought one VCD a friend loaned me was in PAL.. but it worked on other systems, including the computer.. after I got a home theatre system, and connected my DVD to a receiver and swapped from just RCA cables to RCA and a S-Video cable.. I noticed that it plays smooth now.. just in Black and White. So if you find out anything on why it plays in black and white.. let me know..
