  1. Hail!

I've been having some issues, off and on, for the past several months with this burner. I'm not certain if there is a newer version of the firmware, as it was done about 4 or 5 months old.

OK, so the burner burns CD-R media fine, with very few coasters. However, my problem is with DVD+R media. Research on this site indicates that Maxell and Memorex DVD+R media are the best media (well aside from BenQ's own media). For the discs that don't coaster (which is much more often than with CD-R's) data that was not originally corrupted ends up being corrupted on the DVD+R's.

A lot of CD-R burning has taken place on the burner since it was purchased, and I'm concerned that my drive is simply wearing out. But this conclusion doesn't add up, for the fact that CD burner is succeeding as always...and its most likely DVD burning has been shaky the whole time.

One thing I have noticed, is that when the burner gets really warm, it starts skipping on DVD ROM's and it begins coastering CD's and DVD's more frequently and consecutively. I'm looking at getting a more roomy case to hpefully reduce this problem.

If anyone could offer some suggestions or insight on this matter, I would greatly appreciate it. Its specifically the DVD burning that I'm most concerned with, as if I can't reply on the DVD's to reliably store my backup data, then I need another burner.

    Thanks for your time.

  2. First of all, I'm sorry to hear you're having problems with your drive.

I bought an 822 shortly after it was released and had no discernible problems burning a variety of media except it really seemed to prefer +R.

Regardless, after several months of use, the quality of burns began to deteriorate. Sometime in the interim, I tried BenQ's switchable firmware in order to burn some DL media I had acquired.

I did several burns with the new firmware with good results using DL media (Verbatim) and thought the problems I had been experiencing had somehow been cured. Not so. Shortly thereafter, I had a problem burning data on the same DL media (file size was around 7.5GB). That deteriorated to the point where every disk wound up being a coaster and, needless to say, it wound up getting pretty damned expensive. The last time I tried, the burn just flat out stopped, the drive was unresponsive and, in fact, my entire PC locked up. Checked everything I could think of but found nothing; everything else was functioning properly.

I gave up, removed the drive, bought an NEC 3500 from Newegg, installed it and, ever since, have experienced zero problems.

I realize this probably is not exactly what you wanted to hear but that was my experience with my 822. While all of the foregoing was occurring, my Pioneer A08 was working just fine (obviously, no DL capability) in another PC that is configured almost exactly like the PC that contained my 822. I realize others have had excellent results with BenQ drives but, personally, I'll be sticking with Pioneer and NEC in the future.

    FWIW.....

  3. Hey there,

No, this really isn't what I wanted to hear. I'm not in a position to simply go out and purchase a new burner just because the old one is flaking out on me. I was curious to know if my issues could be firmware related, media related or hardware related' BenQ isn't going to replace the burner if its either of the first 2 (and probably blame me for the first 2 anyways).

I was hoping that this issue could be resolved myself -I guess not.

I've already contacted BenQ technical support, but as yet have not received a response from them. Looks like I might just have to contact them again and get and RMA number for replacement (what a pain).

Wish I could have gotten the burner that I had wanted months before this one, but I got screwed by the seller on eBay in a big royal way, so I went with a burner local at a good price. As I've said, CD burner goes off with nary a problem, its the DVD burner that leaves me questioning. Its a nice overall package (the bundled software leaves much to be desired), but fundemtally, I purchased this burner to perform system and data backups, and if I can't rely on the backups, when I need something better. I'm not even talking about coasters -those I can live with- its the discs that burn fine and then give me randomly corrupted data -this is NOT acceptible!

    Thanks for your time posting.

I have the same burner for about 9 months. Just upgraded the firmware to B3LC version several days ago. Agree that this drive is very picky with DVD media. I had problem with Imation media and even brought back to service centre and they told which media to avoid. So far, I didn't burn much but did try burning home video on DVD+RW and it play fine.

One suggestion is for you to upgrade the firmware for better media support. You can get copy of the firmware from this BENQ UK site: http://www.benq.co.uk/serviceandsupport/downloads/downloads.cfm?product=616&type=B

Very easy to upgrade. Just download and run exe file.

    Cheers.
