I'm going to Canada next week and thought I'd take some PAL DVDs with me which are multi-region. However, will a Canadian DVD and TV play PAL discs? (i.e. I can play NTSC here in the UK but does the reverse hold true?)

From my experience it depends on the playback machine. Some machines can playback both NTSC & PAL, some can't. And if any of your discs are region coded, that might be a problem too.
Bring them with you. What have you got to loose. -
Come to think of it, they'll probably play in a computer equiped with a DVD-ROM drive. Your friends might have to change the region setting on some discs to view them, though. On a PC this is done in DEVICE MANAGER. Right click the DVD-ROM drive, then click properties. Next, you'll see a DVD Region Tab; click on the tab and adjust the region as needed.

No need to set the region since the discs are multi region, good chance it will play on most newer home dvd players.

First, welcome.
Second, bring warm clothes. No kidding.
Third, many, but not all, standalone DVD players can play PAL DVD's directly into an NTSC TV in Canada. As an unscientific sampling, two out of my three do. My Norcent DP300 and my RCA 5240P do, but my Samsung DVD-VCR combo unit doesn't. And since you say your DVD's are multi-region, they'll play in all computer DVD drives, of course. -
The above posters are correct. I was providing the region setting info just in case some of your DVDs aren't multi-region.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Oh how I wish! I'm going skiing in Whistler, BC and it's been raining for over a week! -
If you're lucky, you might get a little snow next week. Have fun and keep warm!

In my experience it is usually the more expensive DVD players that cannot handle PAL format multi-region disks. I Use UK and German film and television for teaching and I have a serious problem with PAL fomat DVDs when using the "high quality" players purchased by our audio-visual technicians. I had to buy my own Cyberhome $50 DVD player to keep in my office for foreign film days. I have Apex and Zenith players at home that also work with PAL DVDs: both players at the bottom end of the price range. If you can play NTSC DVDs at home, you may want to consider buying DVDs while in Canada. You will probably find them substantially chaper here than in the UK. I only buy UK DVDs when they are unavailable in Canada. Unfortunately that is often the case for BBC and Chanel 4 TV series.
You may not actually see any snow if you are going to Wistler. Here in northern British Columbia the snow is rapidly disappearing under torrential rain. It is a nice change after the last two weeks of -30 conditions, but the roads are very slippery. -
