Alright, I have a linksys wireless router and I saw on their website the wireless access point wap11. The way it read you could use it to pick up the signal from your router and hook a computer up wired to the access point. I get it and Idon't think that's the case afterall. I'm not sure but if I'm reading things correctly now, the access point has to be hooked up wired to my router or modem. Now I'm pissed because I can't do what I wanted to do which is have the access point in another room and my router in the other and have them set up to communicate wirelessly.

    Any help?

You're right, unless your Cable Modem is wireless. Haven't seen one, although they might exist. The Linksys sounds like a typical wireless router, and requires a wired connection between the router and the cable modem.

Must you put the Linksys in another room ?

If you don't already have a router you'll need one. If you do, how far from the router are you trying to make use of the signal? The access point doesn't have to be in the same room as the computer you want to connect via wireless. If it's not far enough you could also pick up either a range extender or better antennae for the access point.

Motorola makes a combo Cable Modem / Wireless Router.

Well actually I want to use the access point across the room. The router is wireless and to me when reading the user guide on the access point it sounds like the only time it must be hooked up wired to the router is when I am configuring the settings. I am going to call linksys tech support and if I can't do what I want with it it's going to go up on Ebay.

    Hello,

Here's my setup (once I hook up the xbox to the wireless adapter again)

DLINK wireless G router - it's physically connected to the DSL modem via a patch cable. The Dlink wireless router ITSELF is then attached to the PC's LAN port.

My xbox adapter is physically linked to the xbox via a patch cable. I have had the xbox downstair and the wireless router upstairs. I have gotten a strong signal from just the wireless router. Just make sure the xbox game adapter isn't in an enclosed space. Put it on top of the tv or a cabinet to make sure it has unobstructed clearance.

Unfortunetely I didn't buy the game adapter yet. I thought I could essentially get the same results with an access point. It's going up on ebay today and I am going to purchase the B game adapter I think. Just should have read more before I jumped the gun.

    Hello,

    Yep that's usually the case.

I spent a week or more of intense research figuring out what the whole wireless scene meant and finally figured out everything.....

Got my xbox to work wirelessly but still haven't figured out my Laptops new Wireless G pc card...

  9. Hi pyrate,

I don't know if this is the same as your problem but...

    I have a D-Link wireless router AND D-Link wireless
    access-points.

I wanted to use the access-points with the router but
couldn't get them to communicate. I couldn't find
    any info in the manuals.

Finally, after searching the D-Link knowledge base on their
website, I found out that those two items CAN'T communicate.

When I have time I'll check for more info because maybe I'm
    overlooking something.

Don't know if this helps you or not!

Think that's exactly what I'm dealing with. I am going to contact linksys later this afternoon and see if that is indeed the case. If so I'm going to lay this to rest and forget about it because it's become a huge headache for me.

Alright, well I spoke with Linksys this afternoon and here is what they said.

    I have 2 options.
The access point and my router will NOT communicate with each other but the access point WILL communicate with another access point. With that in mind, I could hook this access point up with an ethernet cable to my router and then it will distribute the signal to another access point with which my xbox or another pc could be hooked up to via another ethernet cable.

Option 2: Pay the $60 or more for the B game adapter which will work with my router and I wouldn't have 3 components to hook up. I'm going with the first option since I already have the one access point and don't want to bother reselling it on Ebay and spending at least $60 just to hook up my xbox with the game adapter. She also said the access point option will extend my wireless network which will come in handy if I want to hook other wireless computers up to the internet in the future. Price for option one if I bought in the store would be about $100 but off of Ebay only half that for me so it's worth it for me to go that route than the game adapter.

So, what you were looking for is a bridge (to convert wireless back to wired) rather than an access point?

A wireless bridge is what you use to add a wired machine to a wireless network if you can't or don't want to conenct a wireless adapter (PCI or USB) to the computer (or other ethernet capable device). The XBOX adapter is one example. There are other wireless bridges that aren't specific to game systems.

Wouldn't what I'm doing with the access points be considered a bridge since I'm still hooking the xbox up with a wire but the data is sent wirelessly from both access points?

The difference is that the AP isn't setup to accept an IP address from the router and make it the address for the XBOX. It's somewhat analagous to a server whereas the bridge is more analagous to a client.
(I'm not doing a great job of differentiating atm because I just woke up.)

I see. Well just to let you know ViRal, I read many reviews on the actual wireless B game adapter that both Microsoft and Linksys make for the xbox and neither received very good reviews. Plus, as I said earlier it would also be more expensive to go that route and I would have to sell the AP I have now because it serves no purpose to me w/out another AP. And I will definitely be able to use the AP's in the future as well whereas the Microsoft wireless game adapter can ONLY be used in conjunction with the xbox.

I don't think the AP is going to be able to do what you want it to do, although I could be wrong about that. You MAY be able to configure it as a range extender (wireless to wireless) to give you better coverage in your house, but I think you'll need other hardware.

Well according to linksys tech support I can set up 2 access points to act as a bridge. Only one has to be hard wired to my router. The other can be hooked up to the xbox.

Yeah you just have to use the web config utility and change them from being access points to wireless bridge. Then they will only talk to each other.

Well thought you may want to know but I got frustrated with what I was trying to do so I gave up and put the access point back up on Ebay where I got it from in the first place. Thankfully I made back $25 of the $30 I spent on it. I think I will just stick to wired with my xbox even though it can be a pain to plug/unlplug it often.

My linksys wireless bridge works great with my xbox, ps2, laptops and destops I work on. Works great if you only want to hook up one extra device at a time and if you hook the bridge up to a wired router you can extend the range of a whole new network

Is that a G or B linksys game adapter? I have heard mixed reviews about the B adapter but better things in regards to lag when using the G adapter as in there is no lag.

    Pyrate,

Since I have no idea what you are talking about, X box, etc.......

Is there any reason thet it will not work with a standard wireless router and a USB wireless adapter?

I don't know if it HAS a USB port.

I have a Belkin wireless router, and PCI card in 2 machines and a USB adapter on the other machine, and configuration was super simple, and throughput is excellent, at 54mbs, though just upstairs and mebbe 20 feet away.

4 wired ports, up to 64 wireless addresses. (Couple more than I need.)

    Cheers,

    George

ps2daddy, do you think there would be lag if I bought a wet11 and used it with my xbox? I'm still considering going wireless but I really fear lag.
