  1. I have an Xvid that plays fine on my PC - but when I burn it to a dvd as a data disc, and play in my divx dvd player - the audio is very noticably out of sync.

I have other files encoded exactly the same way that play fine on the dvd player but for some reason this file is out of sync.

    I have tried:

Saving the audio as a wav file in virtuadub, then saving the avi using the wav audio. Didnt work - same issue (this time it was out of sync on the pc AND dvd player).
NB: when opening the file in virtuadub - it gives the error about VBR - any ideas?

Anyway here is what GSpot has to say:

    Audio:
    172 kb/s (86/ch x 2 ch) VBR 48000 Hz
    0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3

    Video:

    4cc: XVID
    624 x 352 (1.773 : 1)
    936 kb/s
    23.976 FPS

    Stream type and AV interleave:
    OpenDML AVI
    1 frame (42 ms), p=168

    Thanks for any help.

Convert the VBR MP3 to CBR (Constant Bit Rate) . You can do it with AVI2WAV and then use the multitude of MP3 encoding apps to re-encode it to CBR.

    Also, look at http://www.divx.com/divx/divxpro/guides/audio.php?nl0105=audioguide

The trick here is to save the WAV off, then add it back in compressed with a constant bitrate.

    You'll need a decent MP3 compresser - like Frauhoffer.

It's pretty simple, really. If you need more detailed instructions, lemme know. But once you know that step, you ought to be ok.

  4. Thanks guys

I saved the wav, and converted using besweet to a cbr mp3 file.
I now have a CBR mp3 file for the video, but how do I add it to the video?

I can't use virtualdub as it won't let me load the mp3?

    Thx

Edit: Sorry - using virtualdubmod, I set the video to direct stream copy and then in the streams list I added the mp3 and delted the video audio.
    Hopefull that will work

  5. Arggh!

The audio is still out of sync on my computer now.

    What am I doing wrong.

    1. in virtualdub, save the wav
    2. Convert to CBR mp3 format using besweet
    3. Open original avi in virtualdubmod
(should I click yes or no to rewrite the header for the vbr audio)
    4. Set video to direct stream copy
    5. Disable the avi audio and add the mp3 audio
    6. Save as avi (takes about 1 min)

Thats all I'm doing - is there anything wrong?

    No no.

    It's ALL done in Virtualdub.

    0. Open the file in virtualdub. Say "no" to rewriting the header.
    1. In virtualdub, save the wav.
    2. Pick "direct stream copy" for video.
    3. Pick "wav audio" for audio...
    4. Under audio compression, choose a CBR MP3 compression - 128, 160, something like that.
    5. Do "save as avi".

If the wav is out of sync with the video, then it doesn't matter what you convert it to, it will still be out of sync, unless you adjust the delay, run time, etc. when converting.

What you need is a wav that plays in sync, then convert that. Try using something else to save the wav.

  8. while celtic's idea has a high chance of being true, it may be possible that when u saved off your WAV Full processing mode wasn't enabled. this is important. but if ur doing the whole file then VDub sohuld be able to decompress the VBR MP3 and compress to CBR MP3 using one of ur codecs w/o any saving off/desync.
My AVI -> Any Format Guide is available here.
My Frame Resize Calculator (enhanced for Virtualdub) is available here

Well I always save it off as a WAV just on principle of keeping things separate. In fact, I have a tendency to save the WAV, then save the AVI, then open up a whole new project to recombine them. But I'm anal.
