I have VCD format video files which I want to burn on DVD, and create my menus using "TMPEnc DVD Author". When I convert the videos from VCD (MPEG-1) to DVD (MPEG-2) as suggested by sticky above, wouldn't there be quality loss in the conversion? I'm using TMPGEnc to do the Mpeg conversions.

    Thanks.

VCD (mpeg-1) is DVD compliant. There is no need to convert them at all. Just import them into TMPGENC DVD Author, and the only change it will make is to convert the audio from 44 Khz to the required 48Khz for DVD. Re-encoding the video just lessens the quality tremendously.

"TMPEnc DVD Author" did give some warning when I added a VCD file. I can't remember the warnign message, it was something to do with incorrect GOP bitrate being too high. Maybe because I didn't convert the audio. I noticed TMPGEnc has a function to extract the Wav from the video source. Does it readily save the Wav as 48 kHz or do I need to do some extra jiggling about?

Neverleless, last night I just imported the VCD Mpeg-1 file into "TMPGEnc DVD Author" and cooked up the DVD files without importing a 48 kHz-converted WAV. I burnt it onto DVD-R and it still worked fine on my DVD player. Maybe this was a freak of nature that it happened to work?

    Thanks

Being non-compliant doesn't mean that failure is guaranteed - that's up to the firmware in the individual player. But, if you want a guarantee that the DVD will work in any future player you own, then the DVD should be made fully compliant with the standards.

You can usually ignore the GOP messages that TDA gives you, and continue with no problems.

Just follow the instructions in this link.

    https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=436#436

I 've done it many times, works fine and is within the DVD standards.

The warning you get is normal and you can ignore it.

TMPGEnc DVD Author automatically converts the audio to 48kHz.

But I converted a bunch of VCDs last year and found that using TMPGEnc (Plus or free version) to extract and convert the audio before adding to DVD Author was faster than just adding the file with 44.1 audio to DVD Author.
