Does anyone know?
I mean, you use a crane to construct high buildings. But how does the crane get so high in the first place? Use another crane perhaps, but then what put that one up...? And so on...

the cranes are not as high as teh buildings
they put a somewhat tall one on top of the the part of the building thats built then build around it. then remove it and re build it up higher till its all done
either that or the chicken built it

Heywould3 - That might hold for some constructions but not all. How do I know this?
Well, from where I'm working at the moment (Melbourne appears to be going through a construction boom) I can see at least nine cranes working on different buildings and, believe me, some of those crans are at least 60 stories / floors tall - one's nearly 80!There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

It depends on what type of crane you are talking about. Sometimes a smaller crane is used to completly assemble a larger crane. Like a little truck crane can run around and lay out the parts and help put together a crawler crane with like a 300' boom. But most tower cranes (The ones that go straight up along side the building and have a level boom) are self raising after the initial set up. A smaller crane or more gets the mast or tower standing on it's anchor bolts and the boom and counter weights are set atop the tower. And as the building goes up the crane is jacked up the building with more tower sections added as it goes up. Depending on the size of the buildings foot print one tower crane can reach the whole horizontal surface area of a building by stragicaly placeing the crane to reach the staging area and the building area. Sometimes the crane is built inside of the foot print area to allow for more coverage or more than one crane is used on the same building.

Cheers ZAPPER - That removes a lot of the mystery... I'd like to see it on action...

Sounds like you lead an interesting (and lucky) life ZAPPER... The pics would be good if you can...

Ditto, here.
I work on Electric Overheads, Steel Mill cranes, only 120 foot span, only up to 120 ton, but some of my manuals show what can happen when you screw up with a freestanding job.
No, absolutely, NO, sidepull. Booms are latticework, cheap pipe (OK, maybe good grade, but no heavier than the engineers say is necessary for the load.
Go like "Big Muskie", with a 300 foot boom, a bucket that would hold a dozen pickup trucks, they should make the boom a little more substantial.
For "jackup" cranes, same thing. I'll try to scan a few, if I can shrink them enough, I'll upload them.
Absolutely fantastic.
Cheers,
George -
If you can't shrink them down enough let me know and I'll host them for you George.

I'm not exactly sure but I'm pretty sure they put the feathers on last.

Cranes are cool. I see a lot of them around here all the time. Will be seeing more once they build Trump's Condos.
-
Trump Tower will be a nice addition to the skyline here.
