Sorry I didn't explain better;
I'm wondering if self-adhesive labels could be made that would be sensitive enough that existing burners could be used like HP's new ones- that the same laser that burns a DVD is powerful enough to affect some kind of chemical color-changing reaction in my theorized labels.
It just seems like a sham that we have to buy special drives and special disks, rather than just get a program and new labels to make grayscale labels in existing drives.

I'm a little confused by this lightscribe stuff... why do I need a new burner? Doesn't the burner I have already have a laser in it capable of causing a chemical reaction?

How does a regular burner work? Aren't there 2 lasers- one to write and one to read? how does a regular burner know that it's writing to the correct place on the disk?

For a CDRW/DVDRW writer there are two lasers and both are used to write and read. The reason there are two is the wavelength of the laser needed to create the correct size spot on the recording material or Dye. Too read the laser power is decreased so no damage is done to an already written disk.

I've never had any trouble with my Yamaha DiscT@2. I use Verbatims for that. The Blue MetalAZO works well enough.
BTW-The firmware and/or hardware has to be able to handle the tighter tolerances required to make a pleasing image, plus the spacing of the "pits" is different than normal, requiring tight laser on/off timing control. I would guess that with those drives that have tight control already, it might be possible to do a firmware upgrade only. Otherwise, NEW DRIVE.

Utterly silly, IMO. We go out and buy the fastest writers we can find, only to have to find special discs, flip it over, and have another go, to get a monochrome image on one side? What's wrong with sharpies?
